Hi everyone,
I’ve been using a simple snitz forum for a about a year now. Time for a major upgrade. I’ve played with the base snitz, and LB version. But I feel like I need a Moded version.
After reading many threads there seems to be a few choices: Crash, SHN, Image !!!
Here is Crash: http://www.crashsite.nl/portal_content.asp
Here is the SHN one: http://www.shnforum.com/forum/sitenews.asp
Here is the Image one: http://www.forums2001.com/forum/default.asp
Pro & Cons for each one… Crash: I love the layout, and it’s very clean. I think the code is as good and bug free as any of them. But, it’s about a year old and is missing a few major Mods (like Classifieds), and I don’t know if the Polls & Calendar has been updated with the latest versions. No CSS & no mySQL.
SHN: It’s almost impossible to search their site because it’s so slow. But, the major issue with his version is that it is not clear if all the Mods have been added to the main download. Also it’s not clear if the snitz patches have been applied.
Image: Again slow site, and very little activity in their forums.
Question for all in the know: SHN: has all the snitz patches been added? Where is the latest down load? What modules need to added to the portal after the main down load is applied?
IMAGE: has all the snitz patches been added? Where is the latest down load?
I guess after about a year putting up with all the users, the wonderful people who put together these Moded snitz get burned out. Does anyone know if any of these projects will continue? Or have they all pretty much run their course and are dead?

Read my "Dummies Guide" thread on the Image site. That will get you going (I hope!), but I haven't checked all the patches yet. |

If you need help choosing, I can recommend SHN to you. I have been using it for more than a year now, and it's very nice. quote: SHN: It’s almost impossible to search their site because it’s so slow. But, the major issue with his version is that it is not clear if all the Mods have been added to the main download. Also it’s not clear if the snitz patches have been applied.
Everything is ready to be used, you just need to upload the code and download the DBs files, if you are going to use your current database. If you need a preview of what it can look like, see the first link in my signature.

SHN is working on their Version 9, but they are ofcourse taking a long time. The preview of their version 9 is their own homepage (www.shnforum.com) |

Faizan, your first sig link has an error :
ADODB.Recordset error '800a0bcd' Either BOF or EOF is True, or the current record has been deleted. Requested operation requires a current record.

If you want the classifieds mod, I can vouch that it is extremely easy to add to your forum, very very small changes, also it's very modifiable. |

For SHN, there are quite a few bugs you will have to go through to fix with thier forums. But I guess if you search thier forums you will find a fix for each of them. |

I've used both the SHN and the Image forums. Personally I like the Image version the best. Yes, his site is slow, but I have not noticed the slowness on the version I have running, but the SHN I have found to be relatively slow ( but then again the SHN version I have has CONSIDERABLY more traffic, so to be fair that could be the reason ).
Image is VERY good about getting back to you regarding questions/bugs/concerns.
SHN seems to have stalled on it's version 9 release coming out. |
This account was hacked into by Image, a very honest guy as you all can see! Stealing people's passwords is his pasttime. |

crashcode is great and also very moddable (is that a word?). My site is also a crashcode 3.4. Support is great, from Forte, Gato and the rest. Crash himself however has seemed rather busy lately with his hosting and with moving to his new house. He's working on SR1 which will include classifieds and lots more if I'm not mistaking. |

I use the crashcode Multilanguage Repack - It is a internationalized version with a lot of new mods and faster code. |

I have been playing with Image Forums recently, and have found a few bugs that Image denies. Even after supplying the code to fix the bug there wasn't an acknowledge that the code was wrong. It might just be me, but I've avoided the Crash & SHN versions and the Image version doesn't seem much better.
However, I do need a portal version for a new project, so at the moment I'm persevering with Image's version. |

I've just run into problems with my host after they upgraded to ChilliASP 4.0 as the Snitz base code doesn't run. So I'm thinking of upgrading to a modded forum but I need all my data intact (an upgrade rather than a clean install).
Any input on which would be best would be great. |

Are you going to keep the forum on the same host ? Theres another post somewhere which seems to infer that Snitz isn't working too well with later versions of ChiliASP (Sun one ASP).
For any upgrade, normally all your looking at doing is taking a copy of your database data and then running the setup.asp to upgrade the database and if running a modded forum/portal like SHN any additional DBS files that that forum requires.
I assume if your on Chili! now that your using mySQL as your backend ? |

I'd like to keep the same host as they've been good up until now. The Sun/Chilli ASP has been upgraded from 3.6.2 to 4.0 and Snitz has gone down since then. On the hosts support forums they suggest going through the code and make the neccessary changes but as Snitz is such a big application that will be the last resort.
Do you know of any modded forums that run on Chilli 4.0 and mySQL? |
