My friend just set her XP home version up for multiple users. Prior to this she was the only user.
Now when I log on, read my mail, or whatever, and then log off it lists that I have xx unread email messages in the login screen, no matter how many I might have. I never leave Outlook open.
Is this normal behavior? |

Add that to the list of bugs. I have XP Pro with 2 users, if user A shutsdown whilst user B is still logged on, the next time user B logs on they don't see a taskbar. Basically when this happens I have to recreate the user (B) again because I can't find any other solution! I presume it's because user B is not loggin off properly therefore not saving there settings. |

Got Service Packs?
This is not an issue on my computer, but I use Outlook Express. |

OK, so I fibbed, we too are using Outlook Express. We download all of the Microsoft Hotfixes. I presume service packs are not included. I'll go let Microsoft scan this PC and see if that helps.
Thanks for the tips, I'll let you know. |

So, I installed every item Microsoft recommended, even stuff I didn't want or need (some I didn't understand, funny how I trust them like that).
When I log off I still get a count of how many unread messages I have. Can this be turned off? I would presume this slows the start-up time of Windows down considerably. I have at least 5 e-mail account I like to have in Outlook Express, the owner has about 4 and her two girls have 1 each.
Does windows actually log on to each of the account and determine how many unread messages each user has?
I could see how this might be convenient, if I had no messages, I don't need to fully log on. But like I started, this isn't my PC and I don't want to slow it down for her.
Thanks for the tips! |

Hey Cliff... If you read ALL of your messages or just mark them ALL as read (unbolded text) they will not show as unread when you log off. Windows XP Home is intentionally set up this way. |

This works for Outlook, Outlook Express, and even AOL. It most likely works for other email programs as well. If you have multiple accounts, check them all. |

Yes, it's a registry edit you would need to turn it off.
This feature works with all Email clients you use. I use Mozilla Mail, and it does display how many unread email messages I have in my account. The other users on my computer use Incredi Mail and it also displays how many messages they haven't read.
I had been searching the group policies and user policies to see if I could turn it off. Could have sworn I found it (but didn't turn it off) but I couldn't find it again.
Thanks for the link Cliff. |
