Despite what I've read on several sites, forums and in magazines, recent research from IDC has shown that Microsoft still has the largest market share when it comes to server OS.

Still it's a bit of a different story when looking at the web server market according to netcraft the picture there is a little different for MS (IIS) http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2003/10/01/october_2003_web_server_survey.html

Yes, which is why i put (IIS) in brackets :) though I think it would be fair to say that Apache on Windows would be the exception rather than the rule, even if you doubled the number of IIS sites running based on netcraft's stats they'd still be short of Apache.

The big difference between these two articles/surveys is that the one I linked to is about shipments, the one gremlin linked to is about installed versions. One shipped Windows Server OS can be installed on one server, where one shipped Linux/Unix Server OS can be installed on multiple servers (unless I'm mistaken, in which case I apologise). So what I understand from these two articles is that MS has sold more server software, but Linux/Unix is installed on more servers.

I wonder just what their definition of shipments is and where the source of the information is coming from, it may also include shipments to OEM's in which case there could still be a lot of them just "sitting on shelves" waiting to be sold with a PC.

The netcraft survey just scans the net, so it is true for Internet web servers. On the other hand, many many more servers are behind the walls such as file servers, e-mail/Exchange Servers, Intranet web servers etc where MS provides full scale corporate solutions.

So in my opinion the two articles are not contradictory at all...
