Works OK now. Don't know why it didn't before - maybe the server was just down. |

Yay, no more verisign! Is there a way to change your searchpage? I used to get a MSN search, but now this Internet Optimizer page comes up...very annoying..popups... |

Those of you who proudly showed/talked about how many times that little program hit the Site Finder pages might turn out to have played a part in helping VeriSign. According to Cnet VeriSign used this as an arguement why Site Finder is (or was) good: "VeriSign stated that Internet users had visited the page more than 40 million times in the last three weeks." IMO this can also (and probably does) mean that lots of people make typos, and/or that a lot of people don't use search engines but rather just try entering domains to see if they'll get to the right site. Which is what I usually do before I do a google, and it can sometimes turn up quite nice sites... though mostly porn But who says that those 40 million people wanted to go to Site Finder?
They suspended the Site Finder pages for now, but who knows what they'll do in the future, especially if the law suits against them turn out in their advantage At least for now we'll have our trusty friend 404 back
P.S. I know the first part of this reply sounds accusing, but it's not meant like that. Sorry for that in advance in case you do get offended. |

Old news, I guess...
from Edupage: VERISIGN SUSPENDS SITE FINDER VeriSign has agreed to temporarily shut down its recently debuted Site Finder service at the insistence of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which sent a letter to VeriSign saying that the company risked penalties if it did not take down the service. The Site Finder application redirects users who have mistyped or misspelled domain names to a VeriSign Web page that includes paid advertising. VeriSign reportedly hoped to earn significant revenues from those ads, but the ICANN letter said this arrangement violated VeriSign's status as a neutral administrator of the .com and .net domains. ICANN had originally asked VeriSign to disable the service shortly after it appeared in mid-September. In addition to questions over neutrality for the domain administrator, complaints have surfaced about Site Finder's reported interference with spam filters and about whether the service lowered the Internet's resistance to attacks. A spokesman from VeriSign said the company would shut down the service while it explored its options. Well they only need to screw up the domain registration database and the web of incompatibilty will be complete.

NAV users were worst affected. NAV Users saw their computers slow to a crawl and Microsoft office apps not starting properly because of the problem.
I wasn't effected, is that because my box is powerful (2.2Ghz AMD / 1GB DDR400 RAM)? |

Not all users of NAV were effected, system specs wouldn't have mattered too much anyway based on my understanding of the issue. |
