Read the instruction carefully, use a good editing tool like Araneae and make sure to backup the database and all file you will be editing...

Read the installation instructions that come with all MODs (in a readme file).
Some MODs require heavy modifications of existing forum files, and probably additional tables/fields in the database, while one installing other MODs you just have to upload some files.

Which MODs do you want to install?
My MODs:
Birthdays - Custom Policy - F.A.Q. Administration - Forum Rules - Guestbook
Links Manager - MyOwnGoogle - Profile Views - Search Log - WebSearch

Download the zip file, then look under "FRESH INSTALLATION".
