I just got my tongue pierced maybe half an hour ago. It took ten minutes from the time I stepped into the tattoo/piercing place until I stepped out again, and I swear on my life that it didn't hurt for more than two seconds, and the pain was nothing worse than when you bite your tongue. Oh, and it didn't even bleed.
It's a very strange feeling, having something both on top and below my tongue, and rinsing my mouth with mouth wash after every meal and drink (no matter how small, except water) for two to three weeks will be a PITA, but I absolutely love it so far. Next up is the hard part: eating solid food :S ;) I'll undoubtedly post one or more pictures on my site tonight or later this weekend (better not do it here since it might not please everyone) |

I have a TAT on my back. I did it a few years ago, funny thing is I barely ever see it. It's a small one, a tiger ripping out of my shoulder blade. I don't regret it. I also have 3 ear piercings that I haven't worn in about 7 years. |

I've actualy been contemplating getting a TAT... my wife has realy gotten into the whole TAT thing, and she has 2 right now, and is going to be going for a 3rd... um... and each time she's getting a little more bold... course... after you get one (and wait a while, like a year) you get to be more familiar with who you are and what you like... so when she got her second one, she knew better what she wanted... now it's a year or so later... and this one is going to be more elaborate still, and more visible... a flowered design on a delecate stem arround her arm with a small tree frog hanging off of it... It's going to be cute, but still coverable with a mid length sleve...
Now I've been thinking about this for a long time... and have been thinking a lot along the lines that bookie is... having something simple, but cool... something that will most likely be timeless... I would do a full band probably... maby a leafe embeded in it. |

I've had various piercings in my ears, no big deal. Still have one loop. I'm sure the other holes are now closed up. Congrats on the tongue pierce, FrutZle! I could never do that...I tap and bang everything constantly. I'd pound holes in my teeth with one of those.
As for the tat, take a long look at yourself and what you'll be doing in 15 years. Think of your age and where you hope to be in your life. Then, think about the tat again. Does it belong? If so, so be it. Make it happen...otherwise, find something that will still mean something to you at any part of your life. I have a tat on the outside of my ankle, and it reminds me of a really great time in my life. So, it was well worth it to me...and still is. |

Phew, I'm off the hook then 'cause I didn't do it "in mourning for the dead" but for myself
<edit> By the way, in a little over a week I have to go back to get the stud replaced (I now have a temporary long one in case my tongue would get swollen), and I might get one of my nipples done then too. But that depends on how much it'll cost and if I'll have money for it. </edit> |

Nathan, I considered that verse too when I decided to get a tattoo but I realized a couple things. For one, I think that is talking about marking your bodies for the dead (maybe either out of morning or respect or some weird voodoo-like ritual, I don't know). That really doesn't apply to me.
Also, the command is a part of the Mosaic law which I don't believe we're held to. If you're Jewish, then you should uphold this command but I think the Bible teaches that when Christ came he fulfilled the law and set us free from it. We are no longer bound the the Old Testament Law with it's sacrifices and commands. I still think some of the commands are good principles but they all don't apply to us in this Age (the Church Age).
Also, the Bible says we're governed by grace and not the Law. We have freedom to make choices and practice our spiritual walk within the boundaries Christ and the Apostles wrote about and demonstrated for us.
I think it's our responsibility to make our own decisions based on the way we interpret the Bible and what we're comfortable with according to biblical principles. Romans 14 teaches that we have individual freedom in the choices we make and that nothing in this world is inherently "bad" (tattoos, music, certain days to worship, food, etc). Both you and I are free to make our own decisions concerning these things and neither of us should cause each other to stumble or sin.
I just want to reiterate what I said before about this command being from the Old Testament and under the Mosaic Law. Some people believe every command and promise in the Bible is applicable to everyone. I don't think that's true. If it were true, we should not round the edges of our hair, not mix certain types of fabric with other types, sacrifice animals for the sake of spiritual cleansing and the forgiveness of sins, and many other things.
By the way, I know this isn't a religious board. I was just answering Nathan's concern about what the Bible says. If you, Nathan, feel it's wrong to get a tattoo, that's fine and I'll respect that as long as you don't look down on those of us who do have tattoos. |
