I'm sitting here at work trying to think up ways of promoting the company web sites and was wondering if there was some way I could do it via a screensaver.

As a company, we've done screensavers for various products in the past, but I was wondering if we could do one that could check to see if there's a live net connection and update the screensaver with the latest info if there was.

It reminds me of an old internet start up castinet, or marimba or something like that.

I'll admit it's kind of creepy and big brother like, but I'd still like to know if it's possible.

It is possible, as Seti@home does exactly that. It connects and downloads a work-unit, processes it, and uploads the results.

Don't forget to tell the user that the screensaver will check for an internet-connection and download the latest info from your website.

To me it sounds like it is a new way of SPAM for ads. Something I would not want on my system.

But I would say it would be possible, just need to work out how to include html in the screen saver and get it to grab the page at regular updates.

Cheers,

Me!? Spam?

I consider it promotion, but I guess you could consider it spam.

I target Drs at work, so I was thinking along the lines of news items of interest to medical professionals: symposia schedules, drug study announcements, invitiations to Online Medical Education, etc.

It's a bit of blue sky daydreaming. I'm not sure if I'd actually propose it to any of the product teams at work yet.
