Just wondering.

I am using the universal login on each page in my site. This includes many many pages who's only relation to the forum is the login. What are the requirements for copyright?

I have to use several of the inc files such as a modified inc_header.asp that includes the copyright statements but this will put them on files that are not forum related. The site is not up yet but I wanted to check because to make the universal login work I had to create a modified version of the inc_header.asp file and delete a lot of the HTML code. This included all of the head tags and meta tags like the copyright statement. Otherwise I got two sets of HTML and HEAD tags with stray code. Will removing the copyright statement from this document cause issues since it is not on the forum pages? If it does I will rectify it but I will have to add the copyright statement to my own files that are not forum related.

Let me know what the rules are for this.

THanks
Laura

unless I'm mistaken you have to have the copyright information (META tag and link back to Snitz) on all pages that uses Snitz codes.

maybe when removing code, you should read what it says !

ie -
'## START - REMOVAL, MODIFICATION OR CIRCUMVENTING THIS CODE WILL VIOLATE THE SNITZ FORUMS 2000 LICENSE AGREEMENT

which part of that do you not understand ?

GIVE ME A BREAK.

THE MINUTE I REALIZED THAT I HAD TO DELETE THIS TO GET THE CODE TO WORK I CAME HERE!!!!!

I did this by trial and error to see what would work. This is what worked. Give me some credit when I try to do the right thing. Many people wouldn't ask for assistance when they realized a problem.

I need to know how to deal with this as the code will not work. Like I said the universal mod gave me a double set of head and meta tags if I choose to use a different header then what is used for the message board! I still needed the coding in inc_header.asp to make a lot of the functioning happen but I can not use it for the actual document header. This is causing problems. Like I said I HAVE NOT GONE LIVE WITH THIS. This is what I had to do to get the page to work correctly and the minute I realized that this is the only way to get it to work I came here to ask for help.

I would be happy to move the meta tag but the way the page is set up I would have to add it to my own coding.

I am here to ask what I need to do to set this right. Can I add this to my own meta tags on my own inc_head file. Stop flaiming me and give me advice on how to proceed.

Laura K

I'm sorry, but leaving meta tags in will not prevent any code from working, they are just tags. You could always have asked how to do it first rather than going ahead and removing parts that say do not remove them, infact lots of people would have offered to do it for you, ranting on at me for flaming you is hardly going to endeer you to the rest of the community, who, to be honest would probably give you a harder time than I did.

Like i said this was trial and error on my part. The graphic designer that I work with said he was having problems in Netscape since there were double meta and head tags. I had no idea what it was that was the problem. I spent an hour trying to see what caused the extra tags and what didn't. I stripped the tags one by one to see what was causing the extra problem. There was one set of tags that was. This included the copyright statement. After testing it I realized that this was the one of the tags that the designer was talking about. I stopped what I was doing and came here to ask for help. This is not a live site!!!!! It took about 10 minutes between testing this tag and coming to this forum to ask what I should do.

All I am asking is if there is another place I can put these meta tags. Like I said I will rectify the situation if it is needed. I came to ask for help.

If you are saying that I will be an outcast here by trying to keep my site within the copyright rules that is sad. I came here because I felt it was important to uphold the copyright of Snitz. I came here to ask for help.

Well Huwr, I might not get endeared as well but I would help her as I see your post as flaming her as well. instead of simply saying, yes you need to have these in there. Just as Frutzle did in a nice way, you act has if she is a child that needs scolding.

Sorry, but I have seen this on this board too many times, in my short stint, by particular Admin and forum moderators. Sometimes I feel here that becuase certain people are admin and moderators it gives them the right to ridicule and be mean to other people. (Just as I see others who complain about free software)

If you do not want to be flamed, you might consider not flaming someone else first.

Also threatening someone does not put you in an endearing light, either.

Your in deepest gratitude,

Sacred

At the end of the day as long as the required META tags are in the outtpued HTML I don't think theres going to be too much fuss made regarding just where they "physically" reside within your actual pages/website structure. Someone else may disagree with me but I think some compromises here and there never hurt anyone.

On my own site the copyright information is actually displayed on every single page whether its actually part of the forum or not, that was my compromise I made, didn't see any harm in giving Snitz a bit of extra publicity on my website.

Thanks for your replies/support. This is not a trivial question for me. I have a client who is very concerned about the look of his meta tags. He will be inspecting the source of the code. When he sees the copyright he will want to know if it is necessary in the non forum pages. If I place it on all the pages that have the login/out he will ask why. He knows nothing about snitz. Just about the site he wants me to create. I need an answer for him and I need to know what the situation is concerning copyright so I can tell him and at the same time follow snitz's rules.

I am just trying to do what I am supposed to.

I appreciate that :), as long as the META tags and powered by logo appear on all Forum pages in the way in which the developers intended then you are in my opinion complying with all licensing requirements.

Thanks Gremlin,

That was the concise exact answer I was looking for. I shall put the meta tags on the pages of my site exactly as they are in the inc_header.asp file. I will just use the meta tags on my files instead.

Maybe if you had to deal with the amount of people who blatantly stole the code, you would be of the same opinion, I am not repentant, there is NO excuse for removing code which expressly tells you not to.

Honestly, If I was planning on stealing the code would I post here that that was what I was doing. How many of the people who steal the code come to the site and ask how to make sure their copyright statements are being done correctly?

Most of them post here actually.
Maybe if you had come along and asked what to do before telling us you had removed it, and asking if that was ok, you would not have gotten such a response.

Reading thru the posts by Laura, IMO she did not violate the copyright agreement. She removed the meta tags under test environment only to understand the cause of errors as pointed by her designer and asked for the alternate ways to stay in compliance while integrating the snitz with her clients site.

So she asked for advice.
