I have had some bad experience with spammers who sign up as members to the forum only to be able to send spam to other members by e-mail. At one time I had a man sending so called "Nigeria letters" to more than 250 members during a few hours, before I was able to stop him. (a lot of angry members!  )
Would it be possible to make a MOD that will limit the number of e-mails a member can send during a day, or to add some kind of moderation to the send e-mail option? Or maybe something like the flood control - wait 10 minutes before being able to send another member an e-mail.

The forum (Snitz 3.4.xx) had flood control built in. It's in the admin options area.
I don't have answers for your other questions at this time.

| EXTREMELY INTERESTING, borge. I have been receiving spam from a person. They had something to do with my helping him get his money. I think one was from NIgeria another from Niger and another from Angola. Others were from different countries. I wonder if this person could somehow be coming from snitz? Not trying to accuse snitz of anything but it is interesting that we both have been getting junk from a man that has something to do with spam NIgeria letters. |

| AFAIK flood control only works on posting, not on sending emails. It could be a nice addition if you could set a seperate flood control for sending emails though. |

| OK. I wasnt trying to offend anyone by suggesting snitz. I know no one on (staff of) snitz would send us those but I just thought it was interesting that we were both getting it. I protect my e-mail addresses as much as possible. I have one that I give out which could potentially get me spam because then I would only have to change that address. |

The larger question is whether a spammer, after registering to a forum, can harvest emails or not. If he/she is going to send one email at a time, all the power to them. Unlikely, since spammers want to send thousands or hundreds of thousands of emails.
I don't think they can harvest the emails from a forum's database. Can they? |

The problem is not harvesting, it is the ability these persons get to send e-mail to members by registering as members them selves. The members who has the "Allow Forum Members to Send you E-Mail" option selected will receive the spam, forwarded through the forum. Many of these guys seams to think that it's worth while just sitting and pasting their massages in to hundreds of messages and forward them through the forum. It would be nice if we could stop them from violating our members privacy in some way. |

| If he sent it throught forum, you have his return email address, which will identify the forum member, and you can lock his registration. |

Educating the members about "false" members may be an alternative approach. You can adjust the beginning of the email message that is sent. The one that says something like:

... could be changed to include some type of message warning like:

Yes, that's what I did the last time I had one of those guys registering, only that I did not become aware of his activities before he had already managed to forward hundreds of e-mail messages through the forum (took him only a few hours), then i locked him, and he kept on coming back, with new e-mail accounts and different usernames, in the end I had to turn e-mail off for several weeks. I would not like my forum to become the new playground for these people, and I think we should do whatever we can to make life harder for spammers. |

| Thanks to Etymon for the idea with the new text in pop_mail.asp. It will be of some comfort, but it will not stop the spammers from doing what they do! I am stil hoping for someone to work on a MOD to help us get som kind of contoll with the e-mails sent from the forum. |
