That's exactly what I was asking about in the first post. How do we go about using Snitz to restrict someone when they put in a birth date that makes them under 13? Once again what I would like to do is when the user inputs a birth date that makes them below 13 they are not registered and instead are taken to a separate administrator definable page that we can put information on how to contact us and how we can get parent permission. Is this something that can be done with Snitz. Trying to think of ways around it is realy just wasting time. Either we can do this or we have to find another software solution that will do this.
Thanks

I was just trying to give you a solution that didn't involve changing the code. Since you are marketing to kids, I would still restrict registration. We could add some code to register.asp that checks for the birthdate and perhaps opens a pop up window with information stating how they can send in parent permission (fax, email, etc.) and that their account will not be approved until that is done. Then, it would be up to you to watch for that fax or email and approve the appropriate account. Is that what you want? |

You will need to write your own code to do what you want. It shouldn't be difficult. I haven't seen any forums that claim to include "coppa-compliant" code, I imagine other webmasters have made the changes they needed to make.

That sounds great but instead of opening up a pop up window could it just redirect the user to another web page of the administrator's choosing? You could make it a field the administrator can fill in or just a place in the code that we can insert a URL.
Thanks

I haven't looked in a while, but there used to be a COPPA MOD. I'm not sure it will do exactly what you're looking for or not since It's been a while since I've looked at it, but it's worth a search.

This is one that I posted on ServerHacker. I wrote this for an old HUWR web site. http://www.shnforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2156

I'm certainly not a legal expert... I don't have the time at the moment to look at them. If you find that they are not going to work for you, we can develop something else. However, it may be some time before I can help out ... have some family things that will take a lot of my time over the next few weeks. |

I understand. We'll look the stuff over and if it isn't going to work I'll let you know. I have a feeling it is going to work fine.

I think COPPA is a load of crap. Sorry, but i don't have other words for it. COPPA wants to protect children under 13?? May i ask what are children under 13 are doing on the internet? My daughter always has a parent present! I think parents need to take responsibility and not dump this bull on the webmasters. I run a Gamers clan website and with not doubt there will be some members of under 13. I'm not going to give that group extra protection. Because i think it's the job of the parent and not my job as webmaster. |
