Hey guys,
There used to be a mod called Snitzheim Steamroller that would convert your dynamic forum to static pages... for search engines and such. Anyone know if this mod still exsists and if so will it work with 3.4 and higher? If it doesn't exsist would someone be willing to write a mod that did it?
Thanks in advance,
Eric |

LOL, Snitzheim Steamroller???? actually I made a mod like this and I think someone modified it a bit... its called Meta Tag Generator. You might be able to find it using the search engine or checking out http://www.snitzbitz.com |

LOL, I know it's a funny name.... but I actually think that was the name of the topic and possibly not the name of the mod. I checked out your Meta Tag Generator and it's not quite what I am looking for. I am looking for something that would make a static version of my entire forum... kind of write out all the threads to static pages. The reason for this is because at my host database space is pretty expensive and I would like to start my forum (database wise) over from scratch to free up space... but I also don't want to lose all that great content I have built up. This way I can have the live forums and then a link to the static pages if someone wants to look up an old topic.

What database are you currently using ?
Was thinking if your using MySQL or MSSQL you could perhaps archive the topics and then move the archive tables over to an Access database to free up some space in the main DB. |

I am using MSSQL how would the people access the Access version of the database? Are access databases usually larger than their SQL counterparts? |

I was coming from the angle that your Web disk space isn't in as short supply or as costly as MS SQL Database space (I presume). So removing the topic from the MS SQL database and placing them into access would move the usage from what you said was expensive database space to what I would presume is cheaper web space.
You'd import the archives into the Access DB and then basically setup an "archive" forum to allow people to read them, theres probably a couple of ways you could do it actually depending on how au-fait you are with making code changes for instance I'd probably look at finding a way to modify the Connection String to use the access db if the user was currently browsing the Archives, this could be done (and I'm thinking out loud here really) by defining a second connection string in config.asp that points to the Access DB, and then in inc_header.asp checking to see if the querystring "ARCHIVE" = true is set and if so open the Access DB instead of the MS SQL DB.
Hope that made some sense ;) |

Use google, there are several programs available which will take a forum or other dynamic website and convert it to a "flat" HTML website. |

This is a good idea, it was nice to see the old topic linked
Is this the kind of thing you mean? |
