Every so often something pops up that really makes you go .

The trick with these is to highlight them, as if you were going to copy them like text.

I can't tell what the second one is. But I'd say they put a very transparent layer over top of the other image to achieve that effect.

I give up! somehow need to find out how the 'selecting' inverts some colours of the image and not others...

I would imagine the top layer is some kind of mask which is a negative image.
