Hi all,
I run my little snitz forum and everything is dandy. So far, there is no need to enlist the help of moderators, but I am tempted by the idea at times. I am impressed by this site's international representation in Admins, moderators, etc. This is a fine community, a diverse one, that appears to work very well together.
Just curious if any of you have interesting stories to tell in finding and selecting moderators for your respective boards. Any advice you can offer based on experience? What kind of criteria do you look for in a good, responsible moderator? What mistakes would you tell others not to make?

Hi Taropatch, I'm blessed with the Administrators who moderate my board. Before I had Snitz I used Bravenet and some of those services. I also had some email lists. I never had much time to attend to these and the inevitable problems that cropped up. But one woman who was online much of the time took to emailing me with problem posts and her take on issues. She had, I thought, common sense and very good interpersonal judgment. In time she became indespensable: my eyes and ears. She enjoyed and benefited from her role as well. When I finally got the Snitz board, I made her an Admin right away. Before long, the job was just too much for one person. Knowing the players, she nominated one individual, then another. Soon I had several people with common sense who were team players. They are now my 5 or 6 Admins and they run the board with my blessing. They do a great job. So, my advice to you is to start with an individual you "know" well who has a good head on their shoulders. Good luck! |

running an active forum, I find it essential to have a team of moderators and even additional admins to protect us and keep things in order. I have been extremely lucky to have mature and level headed moderators/admins that could run the forum in the same exact manner and demeanor that I would do by myself. You can not be on your forum 24 hours a day so it is important to select a trusting group, a group that if at all possible are in different time zones as well. My moderators cover the entire United States as well as England, Australia, Canada and Sweden. It gives our forum the protection and diversity needed to have a great time. I can not stress enough how lucky I have been with my group of people. I currently have 5 moderators and believe it or now 4 additional admins for a total of 10 (including myself) forum management personnel. I am not saying get that many, and to be honest it wasn't until just recently that I had that many. It took me two years to get where I am at and in fact I have expelled 2 moderators in the past for making jokes about 9/11 so you have to be firm with your moderators as well but give the the freedom to make your forum a comfortable place to be.
one last note, moderators need to be given specific directions on expectations... I have seen many forums go completely chaotic with anarchy and the admin is afraid to expel them for one reason or another.
in short, you need moderators, you can not do it alone and expect to become successful. |
