I recently did a format / reinstall of my home PC, I made sure I had all the programs and stuff I had collected over the 10 years or so I have been computing, backed up to CDR.
I got to wondering what other people consider great tools, the kind of thing you install right away, either to replace default stuff, or add features to your computer, not drivers or anything like that.
So here's a chance to spread the word about those killer apps you found Software can be freeware, shareware or anything else so long as it's really useful. I'll suggest five picks per person, any OS.
Here are mine:
1: Paintshop Pro 5 - Great image editing program without the bloat and horrendous features of later versions. 2: Virtual CD - No more hunting for CDROMS, store them on your hard disk 3: ACDSEE - Excellent multi format image viewer 4: WINZIP - Unpack and compress ZIP files 5: Notepad+ - Adds search and replace to Notepad.exe, line numbering and various other functions |

Here are mine:
1: AutoSave - removes the burden of remembering to back your important files. It just does it for you. 2: Nero Burning Rom - great to burn everything you can think of 3: Download Mage - a great download manager 4: IHateSpam - great to keep your inbox free of rubbish (well...almost ) 5: Windows XP PowerToys - how come these weren't included in the OS? |

1. I'll have to agree with the Power Toys suggestion by ruirib. 2. Trillian for IM-ing 3. MusicMatch Jukebox for my music 4. Office XP Pro (gotta check my email!) 5. Macromedia Studio MX
Win Zip used to be one of the first things but since WinXP can handle all the zipping/unzipping, I don't worry about it. |
