I just converted my members from UBB6 to Snitz (yeah!!!) and there is one thing I don't see - a place for a public username. I added a column for M_PUBLICNAME in MEMBERS, and added that to my conversion script just in case I could use it later.

For those of you that aren't familiar with the concept, a public name is the name displayed to the forums, and the username is what they log on with.

Why a different public name than the username? In my case, we run a board that has mainly teens on it, as well as coaches. Quite a few of our members sign up with "sexyteenhottie" as their username, even though we've posted in our registration page not to do that. We then message them and ask them to change their public name to something more appropriate. This way, we don't have to go through the process of deleting and re-registering.

Having a different public name also allows our members to make changes to their public persona as they see fit. Someone who is "softballchick" this year might decide that track and field is her thing next year, and can change her name to "hurdlergirl" without having ot re-register.

So, if there's not a mod for this, I think I could write it, but I need a little coaching. I wrote my conversion script from scratch, and it worked like a charm (after realizing what horrible syntax could be used for usernames and passwords)

Can someone give me an idea of where to start, and please post suggestions about the mod below.

Requested Features:

  • ability to toggle public names on/off in Admin

  • limit to 1 change every x days? (so people don't post and change all over the place, even though that hasn't been a problem on our other boards.)

  • Ability for admin or superadmin to edit PUBLICNAME in user's profile

  • Others?

You want a public name and one for loggin in (that only that member will know)?
This will not be easy, there would be ALOT of code to edit.

Almost every page that a user can see shows a members name and therefore you would have to edit almost every page.
You would have to edit the way the users log in the forums....
It's alot of work.

Maybe I didn't explain myself.

username: "jimlord"
password: "jimlordpassword" (go ahead, try it. :P)
publicname: "J-man"

I have a username and password to log on. Whenever I make a post, instead of it displaying my username as the originator of the post, it shows my "public name". I can't change my username, but I can change my public name. The user would still log in exactly as they have done.

If the user doesn't choose to have a "Public Name", it defaults to their username.

So, in this thread, my posts would be seen as coming from "J-man". That would also be true in the "Members" list, and in their profile. As you can see, a secondary benefit of this would be that they aren't showing their username to the public, and are less vulnerable to the basic "try different passwords" hacker.

Here's another benefit. Say someone registers here with the username "PeeWee". They may start posting and then realize there's someone with a similar name that might confuse people. They can then go change their Public Name to something else if they wish!

Yes, i did understand what the idea is, i had the very same idea a while ago, and as i said almost every file would need to be edited. It would not be a easy job and i think it is to much to ask of anyone here.
It would pretty much be a whole re-write and some MODS would need to edited for this to work.

There was a mod for an older version of the forum called "alias" by snaack. I found it in the archives - http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=19152&SearchTerms=alias. The link is dead but snaack is still around . Maybe he can help .

Thank you Brian. I've seen snaayk in another post. If nothing else, it gives me an idea for a way to do it.

OK, I'm taking a crack at it, and it looks more doable than I thought. It might be my first "official" mod attempt. :) Man, I love these boards (and these help forums)
