Snitz forum version 3.4.03 MS Access 2000 IIS 5.0 NT Authentication
I have setup snitz forum version 3.4.03 with MS Access 2000 as the database. I am using Windows Authentication. I have IIS 5.0 running on my system. The problem with this setup is 2 or 3 times a day the forums becomes inaccessible for all users of the forum. i.e. the forum stops working. A working forum suddenly stops functioning.
The error recieved is as follows:
There has been an error !! The database could not be opened !! Check your config.asp file and set the strConnString so it points to the database. Also check if strDBType is set to the right databasetype. Code : 424 Click here to retry. <setup.asp>
I think the error I am receiving is because the database become unreadable for the users for some reason. The reason being WIN NT authentication along with MS Access database. With NT Authentication we have multiple users trying to access the same MS Access database. This is the reason for the forum to stop working.
How can this thing be fixed? Is moving to SQL server the only option? Wont NT Authentication work with a file based system of MS Access?
I don't think using nt authorization with an access database is the problem. NT Auth doesn't interfer with your connection to the database. Must be something else.
When using Anonymous Authentication, the user IUSER_MACHINENAME is the one controlling the database. Hence there is no conflict at all. But when using Windows NT Authentication it is individual NT users trying to access the file. I cannot think of any other reason why the database becomes inaccessible all of a sudden. It works smoothly with Anonymous Authentication. I am not sure if it locks out for 30 mins. I just restart the WWW service on encountering this error and all starts working fine. It goes down 2 or 3 times a day. MS Access being a file based system could have a few problems. It is not designed to be a multi user database. I could be wrong. Does anyone have any clues on why this occurs?
What version of Windows 2000? I wonder if you've exceeded your CALs
Although Access databases are not really geared to be multi-user databases I have successfully had multiple people accessing databases many times (over file shares) without much problem at all.
How many users do you have viewing the forum at any one point in time?
