Not really sure if this is a bug, but here goes.
I have noticed that when you are not logged in, all the icons to the right of each forum on default.asp are removed. However if I enter one of the forums, the New Topic link is available at the top of the forum.
I realise that when you click this link, there is a note above the form saying you need to be logged in to post a message, but wouldn't it be better if:-
1. That link wasn't there at all, or
2. even better, leave the link there but take the user to a login page or popup login page as a reminder to login. That way users cannot try to post a message whilst logged out, thus avoiding potential errors.
Regards,

This is not a bug (and I have moved this post here for that reason), you can post a message when not logged in by providing your username/password in the boxes provided. |

Richard,
I know that you can post once you have logged in. All I was saying is that it would be better if when a user clicks on the New Topic link they are presented with a login screen, just like when you click on Members when not logged in, thus:-
There Was A Problem!
You must be logged in to view this page
Except that it would say:-
There Was A Problem!
You must be logged in to post a message

You don't have to be logged in to post, all you have to do is enter your username/password in the boxes that are provided:

There is no need to provide an error message and then make the person go to a different page to login and then find their way back to where they were going to post a new message. There is no bug here, this forum has functioned this way for over 2 years now. |

I see. I think I should get my eyes tested. I have never even noticed the username and password boxes in that location before, only ever seen them in the top right. This thread all stems from one of my users somehow getting himself in a twist whilst trying to post a message whilst logged out.
I'm not sure what he did but if he had filled out all of the boxes properly I can see that everything should have been find.
Must be one of those days. C'est la vie!!!
Thanks Richard, case closed. |

I have an idea what your user may have done, as I regularly get irate users complaining about something similar.
I use the forums to run a technical intranet and consequently some of the posts can be complex, and require quite a lot of time to compose. If you are already logged in when you go to reply to a topic, or post a new one, you don't get the UserName and Password boxes. If you then take a long time to complete your reply, for example if the phone rings in the middle, then it seems to time out behind the scenes. When the user presses the submit reply button, they just get a message telling them that they need to be logged in to post. It gets worse. If they then hit the back button, the message box is empty, and they have to start all over again. I would like to disable this timeout if it is possible to do so, as I get regular (every week) complaints about this.
I have another issue where frequently people complain that they aren't getting logged in automatically about 1 time in 100 visits, which I can't pin down. Mostly it works. |

I'm aware of that but that isn't the problem at all. The users are already logged in when they start composing their reply. They get logged out if they take a few minutes to compose the reply because they get interrupted. Then they lose their post. |

OK thanks, that explains the first one. I might increase the IIS timeout for my server to a large value.
The second problem, where people sometimes aren't logged in automatically, is slightly more weird. It isn't anything to do with a 30 day timeout. I have seen it happen myself when the user had already been logged in earlier the same day. Next time it happens, I will investigate the cookies. I have a suspicion that under certain (rare) circumstances something is going wrong with the cookies. This is both with IE and Mozilla, so it's not a browser issue. |
