Boy, using IIS is sure a pain. I don't see why Microsoft never make a scaled down version of IIS for the home or casual developer. I feel like I am taking a chance everytime I click the "Start" button to start the server. It might start or it might not start.
Anyways, the server won't start now. I get a short error message saying an error occured number 0x0850389 or something to that effect. Not very useful error messages if you ask me. Looking at the Event viewer I see the error being logged. But that is as cryptic as the error message itself.quote: Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 115 Date: 10/02/2003 Time: 03:40:04 AM User: N/A Computer: HOME Description: The service could not bind instance 1. The data is the error code. For additional information specific to this message please visit the Microsoft Online Support site located at: http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 40 27 00 00 @'..
The only thing I did before this happened was delete the log files from the C:/WINNT/SYSTEM32/Logfiles/W3SVC/ folder. Cause I was selecting what extra info I want logged. Then that was the end of it. Restarting the computer doesn't have any effect.
Anyone have a clue? |

One reason for this would be becuase the log folder, or website folder no longer exists. You didnt delete the folder as well sa the logfiles did you ?

There must be something else wrong. IIS has been 100% stable on W2K/XP Pro for me, even IIS4 has been stable since NT sp6a. I don't do much if any tweaking over the standard install.
I have had problems when I installed IIS when not logged in as Administrator, though.

You also get this error if you have a port conflict or host header conflict |

No I didn't delete the folder Gremlin. Just the logfiles in the folder.quote: Maybe this will help: http://www.iisfaq.com/default.aspx?View=A242&P=123
Thanks Ruirib. It sure was informing. Although IIS won't let me remove the SSL port under the Advanced tab in the Web Site properties, the IIS server started ok this time.
Thanks guys. I'll be back if I have any more problems. |

Oh well, after starting the server abd modifying what is being logged, stopped the server then started it again, it gave me the same error. Going back into the log properties, I see Extended Properties is turned off. But I had turned it on before the error occured.
I think I'll not trouble the log format for now. I guess I'll just wait until the server is ready to start again. |
