No, don't take that as saying you're an idiot. It's just a big hassle for most people to host their own site. I almost always have well over 10 concurrent users and since I don't want to go with Linux that would mean a lot of cash. A server license for SQL is what...$5,000? Ouch. It's pretty grim for Windows 2000 Advanced Server, too. And there are those other matters of backup, emergency power, security etc. Don't let that deter you but they are worth thinking about. I would not for a second think a firewall and Norton would let me sleep well at night. Configuring your server and firewall incorrectly could mean your entire network is wide open. Again, these are just things to think about.

My forum isn't really that popular yet, so I really only want to do this because I need space. I just have a simple hobby forum (http://www.railway-forum.com/forum) if it was down for a few days, it wouldn't matter much.
'concurrent users' means the people that are waiting for a page to load, correct? Not just people reading material on the site?

Concurrent users means 10 people simultaneously requesting a page from the server, its probably not really even an issue for you on a small forum. |

If you want email, get Mercury from www.pmail.com
It is a free, simple, and reliable mail server for windows. Of course you need to configure DNS to point to your machine, have a static IP (or dynamic dns service), and if you have a firewall let in the appropriate ports. But if you want a quick and easy email solution for your home, try Mercury. |

Lofty, THANKS! But what do I set the "Email component" to on the Snitz Email server configuration page?
Gremlin, I might get big, rapidly, so I would not want to limit myself, and have to upgrade soon.
Thanks for the "dslwebserver" link!

How To Set Up A Web Server and Get Hacked In 21 Days by Dave6625!
Don't take that personnaly, but you're setting yourself up for hackers to come after you. You say that your forum will get big rapidly? You also state that you are very new to this. You are the type of person hackers love to prey on. My advice, don't run a LIVE web site until you've learned a lot more about the scope of the environment you are getting yourself into. |

Check your DSL customer agreement. If it's like some others, as soon as you set up a server, you are open to becoming reclassified from a home user to a commercial user and your rates skyrocket (like x 20). That's the clause in the cox.net agreement, at least. |
--Jördan It's a wasted day if you don't spend at least part of it flying upside down. |

About email I would reccomend Mailenable it's free and unlimited
But I wouldn't reccomend having a web server on your computer for any reason other than code testing. |

I second Dayve's opinion. For a novice on these matters, handling all the security issues associated with hosting is too much, IMO. You can get good hosts for a small amount of money. It sure is worth paying something to someone who can remove a lot of worries from you, while at the same not jeopardizing your computer's security. |

Gremlin's host is one of the cheapest out there, and my site has great speeds (although it doesn't have much traffic) |
