I'm going to buy a new computer in January and just wanted your opinions on motherboards, processors, and video cards. This computer is going to be for "everyday" use, some programming, and I've even thought about setting it up as a game server, but I'm not sure.
Motherboards - I've heard good things about Asus, Gigabit, and SOYO Processor - probably going to go with an AMD. Probably 2100 or 2200...don't see the point in getting much higher than that. I plan on getting about a gig of DDR, but I might just settle with 512 Video Cards - heard good things about GEFORCE cards. just wondering which has the best bang for my buck, so to speak.
so, basically, if you were piecing together a computer today, what motherboard, processor, and video card would you go with? |

I just ordered a new machine for work. I got the parts and built it myself much like I did for my home computer 6 months ago. The parts came in for my work computer 2 days ago and here's what I got.
Gigabyte GA-8IE533 motherboard with Pentium IV 2.4 processor 512 DDR Ram (I'll put more in later) ATI Radeon 7500 64 MB video card (dual monitor/vga & dvi)
I got all the components from www.tcwo.com and they've been really good to work with. This is the fourth set of computer parts I've gotten from them in the past 6 months. The prices are very reasonable and they normally have good rates on shipping ($6.95 FedEx Ground up to 150 lbs right now).
I don't know anything about the Athlons but the Gigabyte motherboards I've gotten have been great. |

Gigabyte for a while were pretty bad quality (so were Asus actually) but both now seem to be putting out a quality product and should do you well.
dollar for dollar the AMD's are probably just still better value for money than Intel P4's
Video cards probably something like an Nvidia Geforce Ti4200 would do you well (Leadtek make a nice one with good quality video filters thats well priced), its basically the slower of their current top end range of cards (excluding the new FX Cards due out next month) |

Well I'm also deciding whether I should be buying a new computer or not. I will be needing a lot of processing power in the next few months. In my options I'm inclined not to include the AMD's, not because of the CPU's themselves, but basically because it seems motherboards for AMD's use VIA chipsets and I have a distrust of VIA chipsets. I've read too many stories of USB problems related to VIA chipsets. Any opinions on this? |

There can be driver issues with VIA but generally they're pretty good.
Consider an NforceII based chipset instead though, considerably more feature packed .. ie on board Graphics (GeForce 4 MX), 6.1 Sound, Dual Ethernet, 8x AGP etc etc
This asus board is pretty nice

Asus A7N8X (You should be able to find under 120$ in the US)
Athlon 2100 (for about 85$) Athlon 2400 (for about 160$)
GeForce4 4200 (128) (for about 140$)
That would be a powerful combination that hopefully wouldn't break the bank. |

Thanks for the suggestions Nate. I've seen some prices for the processors, which are not very good (pretty similar to Intel prices). Just verified that the Athlon 2400+ costs 400 Euros here (about 400$ as well). That's a huge difference... I still haven't asked to my favorite supplier, but I'm not believing he can do much better than the other price I've seen online... |
