Hi there. Going to be building some new boxes here in the next couple months...since I'm completely out of the hardware loop these days, I was hoping for a little feedback on what I should look for...
Below are my requirements (open to suggestion as well):
SQL Server: Big Dual Processors. 2GB RAM (expandable). On-board IDE RAID. On-board dual-NIC's. 2U-3U profile. Space for minimum of 4 drives. Dual power supplies would be nice, but I don't think there'd be room in a 2U-3U?
WEB Server: Big Single Processor. 1GB RAM (expandable). On-board IDE RAID. On-board dual-NIC's. 2U-3U profile. Space for minimum of 4 drives. Dual power supplies would be nice, but I don't think there'd be room in a 2U-3U?
Cost is key, but so is speed and reliability. I don't need (or want) THE best stuff out there, but I'm looking for proven components and a good price.
So, I'm looking for recommendations on: Motherboards, Processors, RAM, Cases, Powersupplies, etc. Would love to hear any thoughts!
Thanks... |

I like Dell servers. Of course, you don't have the fun of building your own :)

I build my own generally. I woud say one thing however, if your web server requires more than 1 Gb of ram, you really ought to be looking at making that a dual processor as well |

I was in support (soon hope to go back to as well) and we choose Compaq (sorry, the New HP) over Dell for reliability.
We also wiped what was on them as we have a special build at the bank. We were also the only major bank in Australia, not to be affected by viruses or hackers.
So I would recommend Compaq, and build them yourself to the most secure way you possibly could, then make the build tighter.
