I downloaded all the snitz files to my server as directed in the readme file. I then opened the "setup.asp" file in order to "follow the instructions to setup your database" as also directed in the readme file. When I did this, I saw no directions at all but a copywritten java or perl script of some sort that should not be changed. Could anyone shed some light on where I may have turned wrong?

you don't open setup.asp, you run it in your browser.

The file with the directions in it is the readme.htm file.

The only file you need to open up to edit is the config.asp file.

when I talked about "opening the file", I was referring to opening it in my browser. So now what?

Well that means your host does not support ASP. No way around that, except to find another host supporting ASP. In my signature there is a link to a forum discussing free ASP hosts.

thank you very much. however, I would rather pay for my server space and get better quality and tech support. Do you know which of the major webhosts support ASP? Presently I am using cedant.com

I guess you can find many, many hosts supporting ASP. Try searching for host in the Community Discussions forum and you'll find several topics on the issue.

Actually, I just checked with Cedant.com and found out that they do support asp. So there must have been some other mistake that I made. Do you or anyone else on this board have any viable ideas to what it could have been? I was at the step in the readme file where I uploaded all of the files into a /forum folder on my server. I then uploaded the actual Snitz Access 2000 database into my cgi-bin folder. I had changed the strDBType = "mysql" line as well as the strConnString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=c:\inetpub\dbroot\snitz_forums_2000.mdb" '## MS Access 2000
information to make it point to the physical location of my forum. After that I opened the /forum/setup.asp file in my browser but only saw the asp source code instead of what the readme file said that I should see.

Maybe your account does not support ASP. Do you have a link to your forum?

The account that I bought definitely supports ASP. It has to be something that I did. I'm not excatly sure what the exact link to my forum should be. My domain is www.ihatecorporateamerica.com, my access database is in my cgi-bin folder, and all of my other files are in my /forum folder.

That's what I thought. Your domain is hosted in a Unix box, without ASP support. Maybe talk to your host so that they change the type of your account and move you to a different server.

Would I ask to be moved to a windows server? I thought UNIX was supposed to be "better". What is your opinion.

I don't know what's a "better" server. Being better or not really depends on your needs, right? Right now you need ASP support. That is only available in Windows servers or Linux/Unix servers that have Chili!ASP installed (now called Sun ONE ASP I think). So you need to find out what your host offers with ASP support.

An alternative would be to keep that hosting package and go for a forum that can be run in a *nix machine. Here you have a list: http:/forum.snitz.com/competition.asp

I have my server in a Windows 2000 host for more than a year now and have no reasons to complain. I guess other people think otherwise, but hey that makes the world more colorful I guess .
