...or are there others that work in mind boogling IT groups. Work for IT people with limited techical know-how.

Scenerio:
I have set up a Snitz Intranet for my company, In the testing stages right now with about 50 people using it, and I have set up my entire IT group with a private forum. Anyone who has seen it, absolutley loves it. Anyways one of the young guys in IT sends an email to everyone asking our thoughts on something. I send an email back notifying everone that I started a Topic in the forum and to go there to read my response and reply to the thread.

I get a response in email, from next person above the director of IT and here is the exact verbage:

At the end of the day the results of any pertinent dialogue still needs to be communicated. I have no intention of slogging my way through a forum to get updated.

What part of easy don't these people get? They would rather have a thread spread across 30 emails? Has anyone here had to slog through a forum?

enable subscriptions, mod them slightly so they send the post contents, and them subscribe him to the whole board, that should shut him up for a while

Who me

seriously, I had a similar experience a few weeks ago while in a dev meeting with a client, they decided that they wanted to make there site more interactive and user friendly, so were going to drop their forum ???, I had to take a very deep breath at that point

What's evil about that? You're just giving the user what they deserve asked for.

It's just frustrating to work for a CIO who's only source of technical knowledge is what he reads on IDG.net and a Director of IT who's major accomplishment for the last year was to learn how to spell synergy (he still does not know what it means) and use it in a sentence in every email or meeting we have.

The main obstacle to progress is not ignorance, but the illusion of knowledge

Sadly it's very common for those higher up the tree to get there not by being the best developers (who are needed on the ground, and often want to stay coding cos they enjoy it), but by being less valuable to the dev pool (and wanting to get promoted away from all that icky code).

All in an ongoing business-oriented syneristic context, of course.

Read Dilbert, realise *everyone* has it exactly the same, and go contract instead to avoid the politics

how about just giving the link directly to the forum in question? (or was that what you meant?

If you gave this person a shovel to dig a hole, he would stick the handle in the dirt and say,"This is going to take too long, let's hire a consultant to find a better way."

You've been to my favorite spot haven't the the Ol' BS generator http://www.dack.com/web/bullstuff.html

Where you can dazzle the Director of IT with such statements as:
transform visionary schemas or architect best-of-breed initiatives try it it's a lot of fun.

or for even more fun play some BS Bingo when the CEO is giving one of those I know you've heard me say this before meetings...

Go here http://www.perkigoth.com/home/kermit/stuff/bullshitbingo/ print off some cards and have at.

Not being an outstanding developer, I often work with users gathering user requirements. I think that gives me a better understanding of both sides. Many times that means that I'm in the middle of the crossfire between the users who WANT this and developers who think the users NEED that.

Neither side is always right and many times one or both sides will come in with unrealistic preconceptions of what is and isn't required.

I think that a similar situation is true for IT Managers. The view at the top is just different from the view down at the bottom.

I'm in the same boat as a Network Administrator, Users wants and Needs and the Politics of my own group. I tend to help the user base before trying to fight with my own people. Kind of a renegade that way, but it is the user community that makes the money for the company while the big guys get bonuses for Christmas.

Kinda sad how that works.

I started using Snitz only 5 months ago and it is now invaluable to the running of our company across 5 States. I was contracted to 'finish' an Intranet project that had already cost them AUS$30K with a budget for another AUS$40K to complete. Once in, I scrapped everything and replaced the work in progress with Snitz and ACT! for minimal outlay.

Snitz has been one the greatest success stories in my career.
