I found this program: http://www.shunra.com/nimbus.htm
It will allow you throttle your bandwidth (Up and Down), but I am looking for something that will throttle upload speed only.
Does anyone know of any?
Thanks, CarKnee |

Doesn't IIS have some throttling capabilities? Would they be 'good enough'? |

I don't think hes actually talking about webserver throttling. IIS throttling is also not quite as straight forward in its implementation as you would expect. |

I am looking to limit the amount of bandwidth my roomates are using on their PC's! We share a cable connection via linksys router and they are running some peer sharing software that is killing my speed. I would like to limit the amount they are uploading (and maybe downloading) so I can go without interference.

aha - very different kettle of fish! Sorry for getting the wrong end of the stick. Maybe you could just *SHOUT VERY LOUDLY* at your room-mates?

what you need is an SMTP enabled router, you would than be able to limit their connection, but these are very expensive.
I have seen software about that allows you to do this kind of think for testing sites at different speed connections, but that probably isn't what you need either.
probably pdrg's suggestion would work best.

Or you could try something like WinGate (http://www.wingate.com).. I am nort sure if it would jelp, but you never know..
Taken from the WinGate site:
quote: WinGate contains all of the necessary tools to track Internet activity and allows you to take appropriate actions to safeguard against identified abuse. Managing Internet usage is a necessity in today's workplace. When your employees use the Internet for non-business related activity while on the job, the result is a loss in productivity, reduced bandwidth available to customers trying to reach you online, and in some cases, legal penalties. WinGate contains a variety of features and plug-ins designed to assist administrators to ensure that Internet usage is not abused, and that users comply with company policies.
I do not use it as I don't have your problem CarKnee..

HuwR, Did you mean SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol)? Not worth the $$$ in this case.
The program I mentioned in the first post does what you mentioned, throttle bandwidth for site testing. This may be my last resort.
PDRG does have a simple solution, except for the yelling back part.
Wingate would be good too if I wanted to set up a new box to act as a router... another posiblity!
Thanks, CarKnee

yes, sorry, slip of the fingers
I would make a machine to act as a router, it wouldn't require much in the way of power, I would check out one of these http://linitx.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=4&products_id=9
it is a uk site, but you can probably get them much cheaper in the US, they are very reliable low power machines based in the VIA C3 processor. |
