We have just downloaded the latest version of the software and are annoyed to find that members email addresses are now compltetely hidden in their profiles. It was bad enough on the immediately previous version when we had to first get up the pop-up box and then right click on the link in it.
We would like to get back to what we had at first: the email address actually shown clearly in the member's profile....without needing to click on anything.
Please help. TIA.

That was done cause of security issues, but as Admin you can view all the mail addresses in the Admin Options. |

Thanks, I realise that but my members wish their email addresses to be clearly visible (to each other) in profiles.....not just to Admin. It used to be possible.
(As Admin I can quickly view someone's email address by going into "edit" on that profile.)
Is it possible to change the set-up please? If so how does one go about it? |

I think there is a MOD where you can define profile fields, you could put "If you wish to show your Email, type it here" Wont that work?

File: Pop_profile.asp
Line: 316
Find the following part of code on Line 316
<a href=""JavaScript:openWindow('pop_mail.asp?id=" & rs("MEMBER_ID") & "')"">Click to send an E-Mail</a>
Modify as shown below:
<a href=""JavaScript:openWindow('pop_mail.asp?id=" & rs("MEMBER_ID") & "')"">" & ChkString(rs("M_EMAIL"), "display") & "</a>

Many thanks for the help!! It worked!
Grateful if anyone can assist me with one further aspect of this. At the moment users can choose to "hide" their email address from other members (but not from Admin) by clicking "No" on the drop-down box in their profile. We do not want them to be able to hide the address and I would like to disable this - not just for new members but for all members. TIA. |

I would like to speak frankly on this subject. I would never register at a forum that forced me to show my email address, its not right. With all the spamming that goes on the internet nowadays, its just a bad practice and a poor choice to even consider doing this. If you do force members to show their email address you will want to make sure you update your POLICY.ASP so your members are well aware of this before registering but again, I AM STRONGLY AGAINST ANY PERSON DOING THIS. If I seem to be coming on a bit strong about this subject, its because I am so tired of Email Harvesting Programs that are used to SPAM individuals with crap to buy or subscribe too. You should really give this some additional thought and be a little bit more courteous to your members privacy.
okay, rant over... no personal attack was intended towards you, just the issue at hand. |

I hope you inform all your present members of this also.
Why not leave it up to each member? |

We have always had this in our sign-up conditions:
In order to use these forums, users are required to provide a username, password and e-mail address. Neither the Administrators of these forums, or the Moderators participating, are responsible for the privacy practices of any user. Remember that all information that is disclosed in these areas becomes public information
So far as I am concerned if you are not prepared to show an email address then don't sign up! Nobody's forcing you to show your primary email address. Use a web-based one (Hotmail or whatever) if you're worried about spamming. What is the worst that can happen?
OK, now that people have enjoyed their rants, I would appreciate some assistance. Thanks! |

its still bad practice, maybe someone else can help. I'm still irritated by spammers that collect emails addresses from webmasters that follow this kind of standard. no offense. |
