Has anyone considered requiring new users to have all their posts moderated until they have successfully posted N times (where N is a small integer)? I don't want to have all my forums moderated, but I do want to block out potentially offensive posters umtil they have proven themselves reliable. Sort of a "probationary member" status.
Right now, we just watch, delete, and lock the offenders, but it's certainly not a foolproof technique. Requiring admin approval of registrations won't work in this case, because there isn't always an obvious clue that it's an unwanted interloper who is registering. We already require e-mail registration, and that blocks those who use invalid email addresses to register, but I have some who create multiple email accounts and continue to re-register. IP blocking catches some, but I think that a "probationary status" would be more effective in eliminating the problem since then their offensive posts would never be seen at all, and they wouldn't get the public feedback that they are looking for. |
