I'm in desperate need of an online store that sells computer hardware. It has to be in either the UK, Belgium or the Netherlands and has to be trustworthy.
The reason I ask here is that I'm looking for a place to buy a Maxtor 5000DV external 120GB HDD but can't find any place that sells them around here, and the only online stores I found in the Netherlands want me to pay up front and then they'll send me the disk, or they don't have any in stock.
I'm going to call around a bit more on Monday if I haven't found a decent place to buy it online by then.
It's amazing how a company like Maxtor advertises for their products but then seems to forget to get enough stores to actually sell them |

Jungle only has the 3000 series, and appears to be quite expensive. Thanks for the links though. |

Aren't they new Frutz ? I'd be surprised if many stores did have much in the way of stock, I think that model was only released within the last 3-4 weeks. |

I read about it quite a while ago and have seen ads in computer magazines for them. Maybe you're right and they are too new to be in many stores. The 3000 series can be found pretty much anywhere, but they're "older". |

I think I prefer the Maxtor drive over something I have to build myself. Especially if it's easier to get something like that sent to me almost plug-and-play.
yes, I admit it... I'm lazy |

I was reminded by a friend of mine of a place right around the corner from work. I can't believe I forgot to think about them, but I guess that since they only sell Mac related products, it's easy to overlook when you only use PCs. Then again, those external hard disks are all Mac compatible, so I should've thought of them... Anyway, I'll give them a call (or visit) tomorrow morning. They might have them or be able to order one for me. I'll let you know what happens. |

I have maybe half a CD-R filled with MP3s, and they were all made from my own CDs. So 120GB is a bit over kill for that
I found a place that sells those hard disks, and ordered one for €275 (that's about US$275 with the current rates). The company around the block from work didn't have the Maxtor drive but did offer me one I had never heard of. But they wanted €375 for it, so I told them I'd go to that other place. Thurseday or Friday the drive should be ready to get picked up, so I'll be making a fresh backup of my (20GB) hard disk then.
Thanks everyone for your help and offers. I really appreciate it. |

They only have Freecom external hard drives, and from what I've read in the tests they're quite bulky and heavy. But even if they're not, I wouldn't have gone for a Freecom anyway (I'm biased towards Maxtor, sorry).
I picked up the drive this afternoon and hooked it up after work. Stupid move 'cause even though it's almost plug & play, it turned out the FireWire cable shipped with the drive is a 6-pin to 6-pin cable and I have one of those mini FireWire connectors in my notebook (4-pin). I hooked up the drive to my USB port for now, but you can imagine backing up 14GB through a USB1.1 interface isn't all that. So, I'll go shopping for a 6-pin to 4-pin FireWire cable tomorrow, or else I'll just have to get a USB2 PCMCIA card and connect it with that. Speed-wise it doesn't really matter, but if I can't get a fitting FireWire cable, I'll of course go for the faster (USB2) option
If I don't forget, I'll post my findings about this drive in a week or so so I'll have a little time to test it. |
