True, but then if you were doing heavy-duty modelling you wouldnt be using just one machine unless you really really were forced to either :) great use for a Beowulf cluster or something similar.
Thanks for the link bud. |

I meant 3D CAD modeling, not all that digits and pie charts crud.

Actually I was talking about 3D Modelling/Rendering !! Where'd you get the digits and pie chart crud from ?
Ever heard of a Rendering Wall before ? many are Beowulf style clusters of machines used to simultaneously render the same scene sharing both the processing power and memory of multiple machines |

Yes, I have been to Sun's render farm in sunny california, my brother designed a promo reel for one of their new graphic workstations, we got to take it there to be rendered, they had 2000 sun graphics workstaions each with 2gb of ram, and it still took 2 weeks to render the 5 minute animation |

Well, specially using programs like Photoshop and Flash I can tell the difference, the programs start up much faster and loading a Flash file of 15MB is now actually possible, so I´m happy... |

I think it was only used for a show, I haven't even seen it from start to end, only snippets, I have some stills somewhere, will dig a couple out. |

here ya go, this is the only one I could find that was still on my pc, the others are on cd somewhere
we are probably talking 5-10 years ago too, things have changed a lot in 3D animation since then. At the time, to rent a wire frame mesh for the roulette wheel model would have cost £20000 a minute! We went to an entertainment shop in london, hired a proper roulette wheel for £100 for the day, and used a ruler and tape measure to construct our own wire frame.

Actually I was talking about modeling for mechanical part design, you know... gears, brackets, and such. Not much need for "rendering" except maybe in presentations, nothing as cool as what Huwr posted, just boring stuff. (sorry I should have read through the links pages better)

There is a compnay who scan objects using a laser scanner and turn them into wire frame meshes, so you can use them for cad/animation etc, for films they charge for every minute of animation it is used in, a strange concept, but they charge an absolute fortune for the privelage. |

wow I didn't know that - You would think that with the huge budgets in films nowadays, they would develope their own systems to do that.

We are talking a few years ago when full size laser scanners were very expensive, and often it is the time involved to create them that is the decider |
