I'm upgrading two Windows 98 machines.
One is a p3 450 384ram. The other, a laptop is a p3 500 128ram (maybe 256, can't recall off the top of my head).
Anyway - these systems are a little older and I'm just wondering if anyone thinks one operating system would work faster then the other on these older machines.
I'm leaning towards XP on both. I have a couple of other machines, both much higher in specs, and I like XP on them, but I just don't know if anyone's had a bad experience with an older machine running it and I'm just looking for a little feedback or maybe some personal upgrading experiences. |

I just installed XP on two older machines (p2 300 128 mb ram and p2 400, 64 mb ram) and they're running just fine. I don't use them myself, so I don't see a need for speed. |

I upgraded my 3 computers to XP recently Laptop P3 500 with 128, the wife uses, hates change but loves the spider solitare. My two boxes, one with 256, the other a gig of ram.
I do like XP for the networking side of it, I like the ability to remotely connect to another comp on the network and see the desktop as if I were using it direct.
I have had many errors when shutting down programs though and driver support is obviously a concern, but with the ability to treat an application as if it was running win98 u shouldn't have too much problems.
In saying all that, I have never used win 2000.
A cautious thumbs up for XP ( I use XP PRO ) |

When you say XP, do you mean XP Home or Pro?
Call me old fashioned, but I like Win2K. I find the new XP GUI annoying. Besides, I couldn't play my old Win 95/98 games anymore if I moved to XP.

You can do this in win2K also it is called Terminal services, or you can install remote desktop on 2000 as well
XP is fine as a home/workstation OS, but if you are running a server go for 2000 The biggest problem with XP is its inability to run more than one website in IIS. |

Windows XP is supposed to be even more backwards compatible than windows 2000 to windows 95/98 games and software.
That said I have to side with Huw and others on that I do love Windows 2000 as a workstation... I've had it at home since it came out... and it's awesome! |

the XP GUI can be turned off if you don't like it.
this is from Paul Thurott's SuperSite for Windows.
specifically this page.
quote: Use the Windows Classic Look Are you more comfortable performing a task with the familiar Windows Classic user interface than you are with Windows XP's new interface? You can quickly switch the user interface to the familiar Windows Classic appearance on your computer if it helps you remember a task in your operating system or program. Then, you can go back to the original Windows look with a couple of clicks. Here's how.
1. Right-click on a blank area of the desktop, then click Properties. 2. Click the Appearance tab. 3. On the Windows and Buttons menu, select Windows Classic, then Click OK.
Change the Start Menu Style Does the new Windows XP Start menu take up too much space on your desktop? You can easily change the look back to the Windows Classic Start menu by following these steps:
1. Right-click the Start button, and then click Properties. 2. Click the Classic Start menu choice. 3. Click the Customize button to select items to display on the Start menu. Also: By default, selecting the Classic Start menu also adds the My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, and Internet Explorer icons to your desktop. If you don't want this, right-click a blank area of the Desktop, choose Properties, and then navigate to the Desktop page. Click Customize Desktop to determine which icons are shown on the desktop.
One of the things I like best about Windows XP is ClearType Font-Rendering |

Yes, I too like that, it certainly makes a huge difference when working on a laptop. The first thing I did when I installed in on my laptop was turn off all the new fancy stuff, and re-enable access to all the necesary stuff that XP tries to hide away.
As an every day beast though I prefer 2000, evrything you need to get at isn't hidden away under umpteen levels of crap designed to keep out the novices, and it is the only OS I have found so far that really withstands a constant hammering from a programmer |

The Windows .NET Server 2003 Family defaults to the classic windows look. You have to enable the Windows XP interface if you want it. |

I would be installing XP Pro.
The box I have will be used as a test machine and possibly play-server for myself and maybe a couple of friends (it will be abused, but not by many).
Looks like I'll put XP on the laptop, 2000 on the box.
Thanx for the input everyone. Still listening if anyone adds anything.
btw - I have left one XP machine I have on the default look so I can get used to it (even though I also prefer classic). Reason is I have to help so many people, I need to tell them how to get around their machine without being there many times. So I'm training myself for a while before I change it around (I always let them know they can change it back as well, many do). |

Hmmmm, that might make it worth considering... I suppose that getting my old copy of X-wing working on XP is out of the question, huh?
I knew about reverting to the old GUI option on XP, but I'm using win2k on my laptop now and upgrading to XP just so that I could revert the GUI back to win2k just sounded so ridiculus that I never even considered it.
My Win 98 box is only for games, so that might be a different story if the games compatibility is OK.
