I am interested in adding a chat mod to my forum and was wondering which one would be the best to use.
I want to be able to moderate the chat and be able to set up different rooms.
Also one that doesn't rely on the database. |

| I tried Snitzzy Chat and got it working after some experimentation. However, I find that Flashchat gives me what I wanted (password protected rooms, etc.) |

I took Snitzy Chat off my site but you can still download the 3.4.03 version with corrections here: Snitz Chat

Is the version at the link above modified to use the Snitz member database like was done for Snitzy Chat? Or can peoploe enter any id.

Hello:
A few Quick Questions!
Can the Flash Chat be switched on & off or is it something that would stay on all the Time? I would like to be able to shut it on & off at night? I would be afraid it would get abused.
How much bandwidth does it require compared to Snitzy chat? |

MichaelA - This version of Flash Chat isn't linked to the forum database at all - the passwording of rooms and operators is hardcoded but would be simple enough to use a dbase call to store/retrieve passwords.
DJ5A - I haven't measured bandwidth - can't answer that one.
As for turning it on/off - it isn't currently configured like that, but it wouldn't be difficult to add that feature.

Are you planning to add either of the two features? If so, soon or much later. I'm not an ASP wizard and I'd rather not reinvent the wheel if you are going to do it and be the distribution point.

I'm going to be busy for the next week or so, but I'll try and get this modified to add the ability to turn it on/off from the admin panel. If I have time, I'll also tackle the authentication.
If there's someone out there who has some time and will do this for us, here's the file modified for 3.4.03 installation:

Looking at this code further, I think I could pass the member name but my concern is if someone saves the web page to the local hard drive and alters the code so a valid name appears. Can the member id field be text not input but the password be a input and revalidated or is that too much? Would that be overkill or a good idea for security?

Ok, so I like Flashchat. Besides the font being pretty bit, it's a cool little chat mod! I have installed it, but on my forum now when I type in a username and click login, I get this:
The chat is not correctly installed. To install the chat correctly, you need to place it in a virtual directory on the webserver.
If you have access to the Microsoft Management Console on the server, you can create a virtual directory yourself (see the documentation for MMC).
If you are using the chat on a server provided by a web host, ask your web host's technical support personnel to do this for you. If necessary, you can direct them to this page so that they can read this message.
Not sure why it says this, when I followed all the instructions in the readme. Curiously though, I changed the chat_ini.asp to include MY room names and what not, and they are NOT appearing! It still shows the default names. When I go and try again, it shows someone in the chat (it has logged the name into the forum and does not log them out after the error). You must have missed it in the instruction, but you need to do exactly what it says. The chat directory MUST be a virtual directory. (Can someone explain why? I don't know that part and I am curious.) Follow the intructions in the message and it will work.

Fixing the above will reset that and it will work okay. The unchanged room names is another story. Are you sure you put the file up on the server after changing the room names? Try again to be sure.

I am assuming you want to shut it off so no one enters the rooms. Couldn't you just change the password and not tell anyone? Is there another need to turn it on and off? According to your message, you want it off at night so there is no abuse (GOOD IDEA; could make you host kinda angry!). Change the password each evening and change it back in the morning. Quick FTP of one file. At least for now until the on/off is done. Can't think of another reason for the on/off.
