I know many people have asked for chat w/Snitz (as I found many topics in my search), but I did not see any topic that listed some possible good chat programs that were stand-alone.
Does anyone have a chat program that they use on their server? I'd like to look at some recommended ones.
Note: I am not looking for any of the free services offered by other sites, I'm only looking for programs that I could install on my server or use where I can still keep my users on my domain.
Any recommendations? |

Volcano Chat works great. We pay something like $5 a month for the banner free version which holds up to 50 people and it's java so it doesn't tax our server at all. They have slightly more expensive versions that allow for more rooms and more admin options but the cheapest pay version is pretty good.

That seems very reasonable. Could you post a link to the home page if you have it? A search brings me to many sites who have volcano chat and volcanochat.com seems to be a squatter. Thanx. |

Pipey Chat is cool but Flash is so unpredictable. I had it all set up and thought it would be the choice but it was unusable to mac users and some PC users started having issues and so on. It's a shame because I loved it. But that's why I have given up on Flash exect for the occassional ad or small image. It looks great while you develop it but every user in the world will have their computer interpret it in its own unique way.

I loved it too, but had to get rid for the same reasons you mention.
It's funny, i usually think flash is born of the devil, but in this case it was really fun with all the different themes and stuff. I even tried to make themes for a project before we dumped it.
Try a search on planetsourcecode.com for chat scripts. I had a good one but couldn't test it on my platform.
I will get a link when i am back at my desk hopefully, i think it was called 'collosus' or 'titan' chat, something like that, req IIS to run.

I've tried several 'free' chat scripts and found most are client-based with refreshes. If you don't mind this, one of the best ASP chat scripts I've found is CoolCafe based on ConquerChat which is also a good ASP chat script. I've tried flash chats but from what I've found they don't offer the same features and flexibility. If you're looking for performance and don't mind dishing out a little money, then Java chat may be the way to go.

We use digichat
they have hosted or licensed options - so you can have it on your domain if your host allows and if you want....
it does cost - but we can have up to 250 concurrent users.....
....and we have had it brimming !!
a new version just came out also.....
I got it in a bundle with a LIVE PERSON type application called Groopz.....

ParaChat looks pretty good. Maybe I'll spring the money to customize it possibly get it hooked up to my members, that'd be nice.
I can't do the Flash or refresh route as I have to estimate a possible sky of 100 people in there at once.
I'll also check out digichat.
Thanx for the suggestions everyone! |

Okay, I gotta ask. Why are these better than the ones that you can MOD into Snitz? A couple of members have been begging me for chat in my forum, so I think I'm really going to go for it soon. |

The ASP chats take a lot of server resources. They are refreshing and hitting the database constantly which may work well with your forum but may not make your host very happy. A couple web hosts I have used specifically singled out ASP chats as scripts I could not use.

Oh! I guess that's really, really good to know, huh?
Several of those packages sound cool, and if there's no contract, then it might be a good idea just to try it out and see how it works.

If your chat room only has a few people at a time you can probably use one without much worry.
