I just wonder how much do people here want to spend on a chat application or to rent a chatroom? |

quote: The ASP chats take a lot of server resources.
Some of these ASP chats allow the admin to set some variables such as number of rooms, members per room, total concurrent chatters, refresh rate, etc. When someone sets these up, they need to take into consideration the server resources.
The reason I've defaulted back to this is because I haven't been able to find a free server-side chat where I can setup multiple rooms and have some of the admin features available such as banning and kicking.
Unfortunately, I'm on a tight budget as everything comes out of my own pocket. I've been considering how I'd implement live broadcasting also and have been looking into services for that too, but with that and paying for a chatroom will basically triple the cost of my website. During setup phase, with no member base, every expense is a liability.

How do you feel about trying Jabber (protocol). Slightly different from what you're planning, but XML-oriented msn/yahoo/aim style chat (indeed it gateways other protocols) - you could do soemthing cool with that I'm sure ;-) |

The best chat I´ve ever seen and use myself is GTchat - which is Perl/Cgi, does not run on Windows server, but it rocks !!! and my users love it - we have tried everything from Conquerchat to Pipey Flash chat and many more, but GTchat beats them all ! The features and the no visible refresh is quite unique for a chat that only outputs HTML - try it: http://www.gtchat.de - and no, I don´t work for them...-:) |

If someone really want an ASP chat - I have the code for a good one somewhere and a demo here: http://dmjam.dk/chat/ - it has some bugs and in no way as good as the one above, but definately the best ASP chat I´ve seen. |

Wii,
couple of questions about the ASP chat here http://dmjam.dk/chat/
is there an english version of it
is there any code that could be incorporated into a file - that say for instance on default.asp of my forum, showed how many people - and which users - were in this chat room.
I had something similar set up when I used pipey chat before.
If this chat could be incorporated the same - to see how many and who was inside the chat room from the normal forum, I would probably stop my java chat subscription.....
Thanks for any additional info on this....

Maybe I should start work on translating the whole chat to english - parts of it is already english. Showing online users shouldn´t be a problem, as it already shows on the default page. |

This chat can run independent of Snitz while you wait for integration. That's how I have it setup on my site for the moment.

wii,
that would be great....
I don't know if you replied to my email or not - because I cannot change my email here at Snitz - and the one on my profile is more or less redundant.....
The one on the link above seems to be very good - and if I could get the online users in the chat room to show in my Acive Users Panel - it would be great.....
I used to have the same thing for my Pipey Flash Chat ....before I gave up on it !
Thanks for all your work wii....

Well, I know that it runs independantly, I have it running if anyone would like to see it
forum: www.JustEndIt.com/forum chat: www.JustEndIt.com/chat/go.asp
But I would like then to run off the same database, I dont want to have my users signing up twice for the same page, you know what I mean, that is why i am a little nervous to make my chat public. If they all sign up for a seperate account, then I integrate, I just see some upset users. |

We've been using ParaChat AC for a little while now, and find it quite easy to use. Experimenting with their server ($$ to buy, but lots of capability), and we will probably set it up on its own host as we can use the chat on several of our web sites and customize it to our heart's content. ParaChat seems to have excellent customer support as well - got replies to my questions in minutes. |
