Hello Everyone,
How are you all? I am going to ask you the most stupid question about the Snitz forum 2000 programs. I'm a computer retard, unlike all of you who are Computer masters. My question is : I have just started a message board and I can't seem to load the snitz forum 2000 as I only want to add a few sections for topics and make my forum look like evryone else's. I was told by my friend's boyfriend who is an IT student (must add - lucky girl, as do you know how hard it is to get a Computer expert for boyfriend/husband???)now back to my stupid question.
He said that I needed to change my Microsoft windows program 2000 to Unix so that I can use this sytem. The negative side of this change is that since I'm computer challenged the unix programme would stuff up my computer, plus be difficult to use.
Anyone, please - can you suggest other ways that I can use the snitz program without changing to unix or do you know of other similiar set-up to snitz where unix is not needed.
If anyone can help me, I would be so grateful. Thank you in advance.
Les.
P.S I'm so desperate and wished that I had studied computing instead of what I'm doing. |

This is not correct. Snitz requires an Active Server Pages webserver, built in all Microsoft web servers but only available with an expensive add-on to unix web servers.
Maybe your friend isn't all that lucky?
To run Snitz locally on your own computer, you need to install IIS (the webserver) if it's not already running. Then create a web site using an appropriate web server tool, copy the snitz code up to your new website, and grant the proper permissions to the database file.
Piece of cake! Read the readme.htm file that's included with the download.

Dear Doug G,
Thank you so much for your priceless advice. "Piece of cake" to you is like climbing the Himalayan mountains or jumping out of a plane with no parachute for me. Noone in Brisbane, Australia from IT field seem to be able to understand the Readme section. That person looked at it this afternoon and couldn't read it properly. I will print out your advice and take it to a instillation specialist. I just hope that I can get my message board up and running soon. Best Christmas present ever or still better than winning the 17 million dollar state lotto prize.
I appreciate your advice and quick response. I bid you a nice day!

lol... maybe he didn't even look at the files and simply assumed it was a PHP app, in which case he'd also have been wrong by the way

As Doug said, installation isn't difficult at all. Setting up your computer might not be as easy as it sounds if you're "a computer retard", as you so eloquently put it Feel free to ask for more help if you need it, but please include the following information:
- which version of Windows you are using - whether or not you have a place to put the forums (a host) - if you have a host, which host and which hosting package
With that information you will be helped faster because the questions won't have to be asked again |

Hi Les,
maybe some basic questions may help set you in the right direction.
Do you currently have a website where you wanted to install the forums ? if so could you give us a link, we can check whether it is compatable.
If you want to run it locally on your machine, what OS ar you using ? windows 98,ME,XP or 2000 ?
If you do not currently have a site and need to lok for a host, then you should look for a Windows Host who supports ASP.

I think my wife may have a different opinion on this |

G'day FrutZle,
How are you? Thank you so much for your support and priceless advice about my forum and the Snitz programme. I wish there were more of you guys around in Australia. Maybe then we wouldn't be having so much trouble and everything would be perfect. I agree that maybe the friend's boyfriend didn't even look at it. The version I'm using in Microsoft XP windows 2000. I am unsure of the host or how to find out, no choice - but to ask that guy again.
To be honest, for a "computer retard" like me, even if someone else asked the same question elsewhere on this forum, the chances of me locating it would be slim as I'm still working my way around the computer.
For Christmas this year I am definitely asking Santa Claus to bring me a IT master, especially to set-up my forum if nothing is done by then. Learning computers is like Ancient Egyptian hieroglthics so you'd have to be a genius to work your way around.
Thank you so much for helpping "Damsel in distress" with snitz forum set-up problems. |

Hello HuwR,
Thank you so much for offering me priceless advice and support. I feel like crying right now as everyone is so sweet and polite. I was shaking prior to posting as most people who have so much knowledge usually like you guys definitely do - would have attacked me and made me feel more stupid then I already feel. I really appreciate all this good advice. The forum that I have just started address is :
http:/www.free1.wapus.co.uk/marakatarinalorissa
It is going to be a General message board for everyone to get together and talk about fashion, gossip, politics, exchange recipe, single women's hang-out,just about anything,etc.. You know how us women are like and need a "gossip pit".
Formerly I was with the Crown Prince frederik forum, but left due to poster problems (people attacking your every word and post) Guys always seem to be more happier and kinder and there is less arguments. Us women - no way as we have to live up to our "evil" reputation and I just got tired of it all and now I'm here having problems with the snitz forum 2000.
I hope you have a nice day!! |

That sever your site is on is an IIS 5.0 server, in other words, your forums should work on there without any problems The forums should work on Windows 2000, but since you've also said XP, I'm not sure what you are using, especially since XP comes in two flavors
If you have any messengers, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo or AOL IM, send me an email and I'll help you out there. No need to go through all the steps on here if it can be done easier.
Edit: No offense, but that host of yours just caused my browser to freeze because it won't allow my browser on your site.
Edit 2: do you only need your forums running on your computer, or are you going to get your forums hosted elsewhere? Because the link you provided shows an ASP-DEV forum. |

I'm betting it's your pop-up killer that's causing you problems. I noticed code in there looking for them |

Hey FrutZle,
Its not often that Superheroes with supercomputer skills who can leap tall buildings in a single bound and work through a computer faster than a speeding bullet come to my rescue. I'm glad this does happen in real life. How did you find out so quickly which system it was running on. WOW!!! I'm very impressed.
You are most kind, knowlegeable and helpful so I am very, very lucky to have a superguy like you rescue me. I will definitely send you an e-mail in regards to advice to make the set-up much simplier. Thank you so much and I bid you a nice day.
P.S Keep up the good work!!! And about the DEV-Forum I came through this section a few times through the crown Prince Frederik forum that has the DEV-..thing after it. Do you think that could have caused the problem?. |

It's the pop-up killing feature in my browser (NetCaptor) that conflicted with your site as your host doesn't want people with pop-up killers to visit sites they host. I'm not going to go into my feelings towards hosts like that though.
I'm at work and have only a few minutes to check these here forums. When I have more time I'll reply to your email so we can see what I can do to help you get your forums running on your computer. |

Hello FrutZle,
How are you? Thank you so much for your advice and assistance. I printed the instructions that you and others posted and asked an IT installer today and still was unable to find out what is wrong or the person is unable to understand how to setup the system. All this is beginning to bug me and a "real pain in the backside". I hope that I can at least get one or two archives set and it will be fantastic as well as a few basic stuff. I hope you have a wonderful day in the Netherlands. Have fun and take care!! |

Dear FrutZle,
I don't know how to say Thank you for your priceless advice. I didn't think it was possible to have my forum set-up so fast. You are totally amazing. I'm speechless right now. You are the ultimate God of computers and should be cloned so there is more of you to go around to save anyone's day.
