i've got my forum installed as it comes, in

/forum/default.asp

what i want to know is, can i rename this folder without crashing the board? ie

/yabbadabbadoo/default.asp

or will i have to go through the admin options and change stuff around first??

sorry, i'm a complete newbie... looking forwards to 343

You can change the folder name. You should also change the Forum URL in Admin Options->Main Forum Configuration.

ok, i changed the directory name, changed the path in admin, and its gone weird. even though the forums are showing post numbers, when i click on them i get "no topics found".

http://www.peppermintiguana.co.uk/cymrugothic

i swear there was content in there a minute ago

also... slightly off topic...

if i make a post, then delete it, i get a pop up saying :

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80004005'

Field 'FORUM_FORUM.F_LAST_POST' cannot be a zero-length string.

/cymrugothic/pop_delete.asp, line 300

hellp! i'm up the creek...

Is this v3.4.x?

Do you have a Frontpage server extension web server? Sometimes the FP server extensions will screw up asp pages when you rename a folder containing asp pages (like Snitz). I wouldn't expect this to happen in v3.4 tho.

That's weird. Changing a folder name does not change the database contents. If you restore the folder name, what will happen?

You'll need to open your database in Access, open the FORUM_FORUM table in design mode and change the "Allow Aero Length" property of the F_LAST_POST field to Yes.

version 3.4.2 (clean install)

yeah, i opened the database in access, and changed "allow zero length". that worked ok, but i got another similar error. fixed that, then got another similar error. in the end i had opened the database and "allow zero length" for every text field in FORUM_FORUM, and now it works fine.

regarding the disappearing topics, i don't understand it either, because i looked in the database and they are there, they just don't show up. i don't think its anything to do with changing the root folder name, because everything else seems to work fine. What i did in the end was delete the forums in question, and then put them back in, and now everything works ok.

sorry i can't be more clear about what is happening, as i'm new to asp so i don't really understand it.

maybe when 3.4.3 comes out the setup update and database update will solve this problem (because its probably something i've done)

thanks for your replies

What do you see in the "show topics from" pulldown menu? Maybe the posts are older than that?

I've been there Dave and its weird, cause even the forum totals showed 0 for each forum. I verified the that "Show All Topics" was chosen and it made no difference...

yeah, i tried "show topics from last x months", even though the ones that had vanished were from the previous day. still nothing. weird

anyhow, i've deleted/restored all the forums, updated forum counts, and it seems to be working ok now.

one day i'll understand it all :)
