I am currently moderated of a Yahoo group with 1700 members. We are considering moving out of Yahoo and I see the snitz program is very common and popular. What do I need to consider? How much is this to maintain? Host? set-up? in terms of price and man-hours (or woman-hours in my case). I really don't want to do any programming. I also need to know if there is any way to moderate "problem" posters because our biggest hassle with the Yahoo board is that vendors "join" and push product. At the moment I can put a particular vendor on moderation or bump him completely. Is this possible with snitz? I see there are add-ons and it is very customizable. Can you set it so that people MUST join in order to view posts and then you can bump them if you like? This helps protect email addresses too. We are really sick of all the ads at Yahoo. You can hardly find the actual posts anymore.

Thank you,
Karen.

Sorry, I am a moderator (not moderated!) of the group. Also, is there a more suitable program of (free) software. like phpbb or vbulletin. The final interface all looks the same to me.

Also, if I posted this in the wrong spot I really apologize, and please forward it to the correct spot.

Very appreciatively,
Karen.

That is a difficult question to answer. Depends on how much help you will have with moderation and the like.

You need a web host that supports ASP and either an Access, MS SQL, or MySQL database. Initial set up only takes minutes. You'll most likely spend a few hours customizing colors and other configurations.

No programming is needed really unless you want to install MODs (modifications to the base code).

You can do this a number of ways. You can create forums where the posts are moderated and either accepted or declined by a moderator. You can also create "Allowed member list" forums and assign only approved people to those forums. If someone becomes a problem, you can also lock their account.

Yes, this is done using strategies I mentioned above.

There is also an option for members to either allow or not allow other members to email them. In the soon to be released version 3.4, email addresses can be hidden.

I suggest that if you have a host supporting ASP and a database, that you wait for 3.4 and then install a test forum to see if it's functionality will suit you. I believe it will. Also, once you do decide to make the switch, feel free to come back with specific questions on install and customization if you have any. Snitz is a great forum!

3.4 has the added features to turn off registration completely, require registration (or login) before anyone can see the forums, and registration approval. If you combine them (of course you can't combine all 3) you will be able to "screen" your new members and effectively keep out those people who aren't registered.
