will this be down to my setup being wrong or an insecurity with sniz generally?

There are some security issues with Snitz 3.3.03. It's likely that your hacker just took advantage of one of those.

Upgrade to 3.3.05. Read this: http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=30741

Also 3.4 should be out next week. It will be worth upgrading again then.
