I have just been reading through everyone's woes at upgrading to SQL from Access.
When should I really think about doing this. My forum is growing quickly, about 1000 posts a week (that's a lot compared to when it started), but I'd rather do it now than wait until this figure doubles.
What benefits would I gain from transferring to SQL 2000 from Access 97(snitz3.3.03)?
The are no woes. I've done this time and again, for testing, for other Sniz users and I have rarely had problems doing it. The gains resulting from migration to SQL Server are basically performance and reliability. SQL Server handles many more simultaneous users and is more reliable.
While you do no migrate to SQL Server, you should at least upgrade your DB to Access 2000 or 2002. It's more robust than Access 97.
Would you say that converting from Access 2000 to MSSQL 7 should result in an initial loss of performance until the forums are well populated? I converted my forums to SQL 7 and noticed the page loads drooped from an average of about 0.6 seconds with Access to 2.5 seconds with SQL.
Wow, a vast improvement now average .48 seconds SQL and .24 on access would you say this now slight hit on performance will be out weighed by the stability and user performance as the forum gets busier.
The balance will shift towards SQL Server once you get a bigger number of concurrent users and more posts. Access is pretty good for low traffic forums, but SQL Server is just in a different league.
