Anybody else think it would be a good idea to have an option in a reply post to "reply w/quote" or "reply w/shortcut to quote"
or something like that...

Basically, instead of copying the original message into the new message it would display the original message as a link to the original. This would save on DB size, and I think make it a cleaner look.
Of course, the main drawback would be if the user edits the original
post then it may not make sense in the reply.

may not be very helpful, if the post you are quoting is only one or two above yours, you may not notice the page move when you click the links

actually, I meant not so much a link to the original, but a link to the database record of the original message. The reply would simply redisplay the orginal message, which would link back to the original record vs copying the text into the new record.

am I making any sense? It's getting late here.

I think I understand, however this would mean for every reply with a quote you would need to re queery the db for the quoted message, it is far less overhead to just store some extra text in the reply

Also, sometimes you just want to quote a small part of the original thread, and other times you want to quote/answer, quote/answer, quote/answer. To do all this with a link would be a bit complicated...
