This is a MOD/Enhancement to SMILE MANAGER 3.3.
You must have Smile Manager 3.3 installed BEFORE adding this MOD.
Biggest Feature:
Allows Admin to make Smiles visible or not visible to members.
This makes it possible for the Admin to add multiple code variations for a single smile BUT only have the "correct" version show up on the popup list.
Example:
This is part of my Smiles Admin page:
In Bang Head, I allow users to put "[0|]", "[o|]" or "[O|]" and the smile will still work.
When they click on Insert Smilie, though, they only see:
ALSO... notice that Alien is not visible, so it doesn't show up on the Smiles List.
This allows Admins to include SECRET Smiles or Easter Eggs for their members to find (remember, even though it is not on the list, it still works if you have it enabled).
Other Features:
- Allows for Smiles with > or < as part of code - Sorts Smile List by Description
Download:
MOD to Smile Manager 3.3
Please post with your comments, questions and suggestions.
EDIT (4/4/02):
Added a DBS that will import all the default SNITZ smiles into the database. The ZIP has been updated.
If you just want the import DBS file you can download it here:
dbs_addoldsmiles.txt
Just change the .txt to .asp. This DBS will only work with the above MOD to Smile Manager 3.3.

Non visible smilies don't need a description.
There are some other things that can be done to the smilie mod to improve it.
-Add an ordering system as I have done with the RTE version. -Allow editing of the entire list of smilies at the same time. -Adjust smilie page so that the icons/controls for adding ect are a bit more "Snitzy" -Figgure out some way to internationalize it (difficult because the description will need to be in multiple languages)

Nathan:
Thanks for the suggestions... I just downloaded the Smile Manager today (and made my MODs right after that) so I am still trying to figure out ways to make it more useful.
Another thing that would be helpful is for it to replace the Insert Smilie page and not be another button next to it.
The DBS should add all the default smilies into the database, or maybe scrape the inc_functions page in case the person has manually added their own (this would need to be done seperate from the DBS).
I agree about editing the whole page at once... it was a pain to uncheck Visible and click Update over and over.
Anyway, this was my first stab, so I'll collect the feedback and see if I can take another go round at it.
I think these enhancements do improve the original MOD enough to make it worth the download.

One thing you seem to have forgotten: when you use a smilie that isn't shown in the smilie pop-up page and someone replies, they'll be able to use it just as you could. So it's not fool proof unless you only use those smilies in a locked topic
Otherwise it looks cool and it's a great improvement. As Nathan said, allow to update all smilies at the same time would be another great improvement, as would pagination of the smilie pop_up page be. Right now if you have more than 40 smilies loading the page will be really slow on 56K modems, especially if you use animated smilies. Adding pagination would help a lot except when the smilie you want is on page 5 lol

you might want to change the readme though (some folks might not get this...)
i. admin_smiles.gif ii. pop_new_smiles.gif iii. pop_smiles_noclick.gif iv. inc_functions.asp
i believe you meant .asp instead of .gif

Thanks, Crash.
You can tell where my mind was after adding 80 smiles.
The ZIP has been updated!

You cannot paginate that page if you want to edit all the smilies at once. Cause then you couldn't work with the order and stuff like that. (Switching back and fourth would loose all your info.)
The thing is that the mods author Stimmy isn't around anymore. Its a good philosophy that a mod, like a work of art, is never finished only abandoned. So the smilie manager needs adopted.
If you need tips on accomplishing the whole page edit task, just ask, I have some ideas.
I have a dbs file that inserts all the orgional smilies (only one variation of each though ), you will find it in the RTE zip file.

I was planning on adding Categories for the Smiles (sorry, I refuse to call them Smilies).
Then you could view by Category (and order by Category).
On my site, the categories would be General and Star Wars.
Nathan... should be easy to add the others to the DBS.

That would be great Aaron. We've had many users ask for that.

I added to the ZIP file a DBS that imports the default Snitz smiles into the Smiles Db table.
If you already have the MOD to Smile Manager 3.3 installed, you can get the DBS from here:
dbs_addoldsmiles.txt
You will need to change .txt to .asp.

i have the smilies mod installed and so i also have a table called SMILES. if i'd run your DBS file, i would get errors stating that the table already exists. the DBS would stop.
you might want to create a dbs that only adds the columns needed for your add-on and fill them with values

Crash:
The DBS does not try to add the table SMILES.
The dbs file: dbs_modsmilemod.asp adds a field called Visible (using Alter not Create).
The dbs file: dbs_addoldsmiles.asp adds the old smiles to the SMILES table (using Insert).
You have to have the first DBS file installed to load the second one (or you need to remove the Visible field from the second one since it doesn't exist in the original Smile Manager).

Everyone:
I am putting more into this MOD including:
- Categories for Smiles
But, I am wondering what else people might want in this MOD to make it even better... i.e. paging for the Smiles pop-up.
I am going to use this discussion to build a spec that I can build off of.
I thing I thought of was a way for the Member to delete (or make not visible) smiles that they don't use - so it would reduce the number on the pop-up... would this be useful?
What else?
Thanks!
