Have anybody heared about any mods protecting the mailaddys be default ?
So that the mailadresses never leave the DB, everything is procceed in the background. Or at least that they are encrypted at the asp output ? - even if I remove the cells (pop_mail.asp) that show the mailadresses and leave them as a hidden fields, its not hidden in the "show source" and are open for mailharvester programs. Lately I have had serval complaints from users of my forums that their mailadresses is under heavy spam attacks. I checked it out by signing up a hotmail adress that I only used once - to register at a forum. A week later this mail account was spammed also.

The Hide Email Address Mod should do the job. You can get it here: http://snitz.info

The hide e-mail mod lets your members decide if they wish to hide or show their e-mail address on the forums. You won't be able to send them an e-mail using the e-mail links, but they can still subscribe to topics etc. etc.

Thanks FrutZle. That was also how I had this mod in memory. I remember once I tryed to find out what mailadress was used on the Delphi-forums when I mailed another member, but it was impossible (at least it was to me), a feature like that would be excellent if possible. It might also help minimizing the numbers of false mailadresses by signing up to the forums. As it is right now, at my forums, I do understand those that donīt want to give their valid mailadresse to the singup form if they risk their mailbox getting filled up with all kind of crap a week later.

Does anybody know how those harvesters work ? - are they acting like the programs that download entire sites ? - if so, they only work with documents inside the site. Then it is possible to just add a <% =strForumURL %>/ in front of pop_mail.asp (in topic.asp and pop_profile.asp) - then the documents are registred as external links, here an ex. from topic.asp:
<a href="JavaScript:openWindow('pop_mail.asp?id=<% =rsReplies("MEMBER_ID") %>')"><img src="icon_email.gif" height=15 width=15 alt="Email Poster" border="0" align="absmiddle" hspace="6"></a>
and change it into:
<a href="JavaScript:openWindow('<% =strForumURL %>/pop_mail.asp?id=<% =rsReplies("MEMBER_ID") %>')"><img src="icon_email.gif" height=15 width=15 alt="Email Poster" border="0" align="absmiddle" hspace="6"></a>
I think I will give this change a try to see if this reduce the numbers of mailspammers.

You can also replace your @ symbol in your text with %40 which should also help to slow down the email harvesters...

Thanks for the info!
I tryed out two different mailharvesters, they could not collect the membermails on a clean install of Snitz (with member-only acces to the profiles) and they could not on my changes also. So I guess it must be a hardworking copy and paste entsuiast that have signed up to manually collect the mailadresses. I will give him a right-click menu to fight in the popup-window, canīt find any better ideas right now. And also try to make a logfile to pop_mail.asp to store the ipīs that hit this file beond a normal number of times.
