I think you should look at Davio's Poll Mod. The theory is to take a topic, and add a field that just says "IS_NEWS" with a 0 or 1. Then you can make a page looking for all topics were IS_NEWS equals 1. I did it for a friend on pcsportsupdate.com, seems to work well. It's only in beta version though since I'm going to add features. BUT - I'm waiting for 3.4 before I do anything more to it. It'll never be a mod since I'll just be working off of my own pages, and not really Snitz stuff, but it should lead you in the right direction.
