Hello All,

I have posted this message somewhere else but the question seem to be asked here the most so I've posted this here too!

As people have had so many problems uploading their forum to Brinkster I have put together a Brinkster friendly forum.... All the files it contains will upload without modification and so far all seem to be working fine...

The forum includes an access 2000 database, it also includes a con string already set in place for access 2000 all the user has to do is add their username to the string, the forum also includes the fix for the hot topic folders.....

If you want to go to the test forum for this package then point your browser here: http://www25.brinkster.com/rbndvs/forum/ if you find any bugs please report them there.

If you want to download, check for bugs, direct someone else to the package then go here: http://www25.brinkster.com/rbndvs/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4

I'm not too sure if I needed permission to mess with the forum in this way but if I did please let me know, give me good slagging off or what ever you like

I hope this helps a few people get started with Snitz!
Robin (Doughnut)

Additions:
04/12/01 - topic.asp now contains the printer friendly fix.

If you've included a readme file, please add one part to it:
Change the name of the database (both of the file itself and in config.asp!) to make it more difficult for others to download your database.

Alright Honda,

Can you post the top part of your config.asp ... around the conn string area?

Alright Roland,

Do you mean change your database name so that the name is only recognisable to your self?
If so good idea mate!

let me know if thats what you mean, ok.
Doughnut.

Yep, that's exactly what I mean. That way others don't know which file to download. It's the only way I know to keep people from downloading the database if there's no special database folder.

Wouldn't it have been easier for you Doughnut if you just provided the modified files for Brinkster, instead of providing the whole forum? How are you going to maintain it when Snitz Forums releases new updates? And you do know that when users run into any problems on the forum, they are going to come to you since it's your modified forum they downloaded. I know that from experience, since I provide my anonymous access mod with the entire forum.

Just trying to help you out.

David's right. You could put a message in the readme file that they shouldn't come to you for help but should post their questions on these boards, but seeing how few people actually use readme files (or manuals) when they install things... well I doubt that'll work.

Good Question Davio...

This is purely to help those who need help "total beginners" I have had loads of help since I started using Snitz so I am more than happy to put a bit back....seems to me it will take a load off the mods who can then get on with the tougher problems instead of answering...Brinkster, Brinkster, Brinkster, day in day out!

It'll help people right now to get an easy start and I am willing to add more to the forum if necssary in fact I managed to finally get a response from Brinkster themselves and have asked them to send me any further code restrictions they plan to intruduce which they told me they will be doing on the future...

I actually loaded this forum onto Brinkster today to see if it helps and I can tell you it gets the job done loads quicker!

Anyway...Hope it helps a few people
Doughnut.

Good luck. I think you're doing one hell of a job.

And I agree that it's good to do something back for the people that are behind all this and do so much work and help so many people.

I've been asking for help a lot too and have been trying to help others (some more successful than others) for a while now. That's both very rewarding (makes ya feel good about doing something back) and you learn more about the options and get to go more in-depth into the Snitz philosophy and coding.

Now what was I going to say...? Oh well. Maybe someone else knows where I was going with this?

I'm having the same problem Honda did. Here's the part you asked him to post (I believe). Bear with me, I know nothing of html or coding of any sort. I just merely want a good forum for my site.

'## Make sure to uncomment one of the strConnString lines!

Hello Ransom,

This is your conn string line ok:
strConnString = "DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=" & Server.MapPath("/add_username_here/db/snitz_forums_2000.mdb") '## MS Access 2000 on Brinkster

Change the red part for your Brinkster username if you haven't already and you should be ok... give it a go!

Cheers, Robin.

Hi Ransom,

Just a little update here!

Use this line instaed of the line I gave you:
strConnString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & Server.MapPath("/your_username_goes_here/db/snitz_forums_2000.mdb") '## MS Access 2000 on Brinkster

This will save yo a few headaches in the future!

Hey Doughnut, thanks for the help. I did manage to get it working eventually on my own, I just had to sit back and think about things for a while instead of getting impatient and expecting everyone to give me all the answers. But you're help is appreciated nontheless.
