For two reasons:
1) Nobody asked for it before, and I visit the site at least 2-3 times a day (if not 10 times); 2) I have no control on it as moderator.
I'll ask administrators to enable it if more than one people wants this feature. Is topic level OK?

I don't think that they will be angry . I just asked for it. If the mail systems is working and there are no performance/bandwidth related problems, I think it will be turned on. I personally don't use it because otherwise my mailbox will be full of messages.

I plan to ask Richard to delete all subscriptions releated to this forum. This is because I moved/am moving a lot of topics to the archive forum. Then you can subscribe again to relevant ones.
I also plan to have a locked "announcement" topic for more important/global issues.
Any ideas/objections?

Subscriptions have been turned back off for the entire forums, they are causing serious performance issues.
This will be for the forseable future.

As subscriptions are not critial stuff, wouldn't it be wise to delete all of them and turn them back on (with correct level and where necessary only) - at least until it becomes a problem? Probably in the meantime the DEV group can find a solution for this.
For example I may ask people just to subscribe to the announcement topic and to their workgroup in internationalization. I'm sure most of the users will do this.

even with limited subscriptions it is a big strain on the server, we have already downgraded them and removed subs twice and moved the code out of asp into an NT service, but this just diverts the problem from the ASP mail component to the db
