I only have one problem. I am planning on implementing a "Who Voted" feature where you can see a list of users who voted. I have seen on another site where the list of users who voted is shown in a dropdown list box, in the same topic as the poll. That really saves a lot of space. But I think it will take up a lot of time if thousands of users posted and it needed to get all those names.
I could probably put a link in the poll topic to open a new window and list the users there. I could also make this an admin option to turn on or off the feature to show who voted. Would I need to have an option to restrict this to admins/mods or members only kind of thing? Hopefully not. Just let all users see it.
I could also let the feature apply to a members only poll. Because if a un-registered user votes there won't be a username to store.
Anyone got any thoughts on implementing this feature? |

Davio - here's a thought. If someone archives a topic, obviously the topic gets closed, but I didn't know if the poll automatically gets closed as well (also a possible good time for votes deletion as I suggested before). Random thought I had.
As for the possibility of listing the names of the votes, I understand where some people could like this, but I certainly wouldn't. I expect a lot of votes for some polls, and this would just cause "drag" time. Maybe a pop-up window? I guess, that could make both sides happy. As you mentioned, for polls that allow everyone to vote, it may not be that useful anyway. If you do implement it, I'd hope it was something "on the side" like another page or window. Just my opinion.
Looking forward to this |

Definitely a separate window. That way it can build while the viewer reads more posts or moves on to something else. That way it can load and take as long as it wants. And the user has the option to close the window if it takes too long but it does not make them reopen a window to get back where they were.
Minimally, it should be for administrators. I suspect if it is a huge number of people it will put a strain on the system and, more so, on the database. This would work best with SQL Server but I suspect most people are using Access.
I guess you could say that only those who voted should see it because they are the ones who showed the interest and voted. Not sure on that one.
I feel stronger about the first two comments than the third.
Just my opinion. Hope it is ready soon because I am anxious to use it.
Thanks.

Oh, I only assumed it was an admin-only function. I certainly wouldn't want my users being able to see that. Just adding to my thoughts above. |

I'd very much like an option to see who has voted on a particular poll. To save on bandwidth of a site for me being restricted to admins only to view this would be fine. Hope it is a fairly easy add on. Needless to say this is one mod that I am waiting for before upgraing to 3.4 as it's essential on my forum at the moment.
Thanks, Chris |

I am giving the same permissions a user has, as if it was a topic. So if they can't reply or edit a topic when archived, they won't be able to do the same for a poll. That includes voting as well. The poll will be locked if archived.
Talking about archiving polls, I need to test that. And to check for polls in the archive when upgrading. Thanks for reminding me. quote: (also a possible good time for votes deletion as I suggested before)
Good thought. I will implement that.quote: I guess you could say that only those who voted should see it because they are the ones who showed the interest and voted. Not sure on that one.
Good point.
There is so many different ways I can implement this option. I think I will implement it at the admin/moderator level first and see how it goes after that. Since it is not many users wanted the feature.
Guys, thanks a lot for your input. It makes it easier adding in the features when I get your input.
I have one more question that I need your opinion on too. Some forum polls doesn't allow the user to see the results before they post. Currently, you can see the poll results before you vote. Would you prefer not allowing a user to see the poll results before they vote? I admit I do it sometimes and look at the results first, then decide on my vote. |

I don't want the users to see the results. I'd like for them to have the question and the choices, and that's it (nice and tidy as well). If you'd like to have a link saying "see results", that'd be fine (because then some of us could just remove it if we wanted to). Reasons being: 1) Users votes can be effected by what they already see. If they see the results, they may not vote the same. 2) The default on most sites is: vote, then see results. One of the reasons for this is it provides an incentive to vote and encourages interaction. 3) I'm not sure how you have it setup now, but if it's see results and then a "click here to vote", I'm not a fan of that at all. The less clicks, the more votes.
Once again, just my thoughts
Whichever route you go, thanx for listening |

You can see the existing results of a poll without actually voting. Then you can vote when you're done. That's how it is now. Only just thought of it.
Don't you have the poll mod installed on your forum? I know I helped you get it on your front page too. How come you don't know if there is a Vote Results link with the poll? It's been there for quite a while. |

Sweet! This mod will be very useful to me. Thanks Davio!
Some of my thoughts: I would say that allowing the viewers to view the results should be an option at posting time. let the user that posts the poll decide wether he wants the users to see the results before a vote is cast.
I think this goes for the list of users that voted as well. have an option at the cast of the poll to designate who can view the list of users that voted. examples would be: admins only, moderaters/admins, all users, posting user.
Just my thoughts. |

Davio - I was never able to get it to work properly on any other page other then the topic page or default for the forums, so I never implemented it when I changed my forums structure (I combined my 2 sites to have the same members and share the misc forums).
I didn't know if you had changed it at all since then, or if the new new one was slightly different from what was on your site, so I was just speaking hypothetically. |

Davio - May I direct your attention to this topic: http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=34757
Having the poll close automatically at a certain time is a good idea. So would then having a secondary featured poll, maybe something to default to if the featured one automatically closes. Let me say that I know this would be a lot of work, so please don't work on it now, I don't want to hold up this version I do think this would be nice for a future release. Any time people are voting on an event, this comes into play. Just a thought to add to the next version perhaps. |

I have seen it. I dislike coding with dates. Comes with too many problems when computers have different regional settings. I have seen too many date bugs in the past with other mods that I am afraid to go anywhere near dates. I wouldn't know how to fix them if a problem occured with dates.
But if I do manage to tackle it, I will keep it on my list of future things to do. |

Davio,
Are you getting closer to the release date? Any ETA? I'm not rushing you, just asking for planning purposes. I have two MODs to go and I'm done and Poll is one of them. I'm planning my rollout to my other two forums.
Thanks.
Mike
