I was wondering before I download and setup, if there is a way to setup a private board area. Have serveral sections for memebers to post, but a another section that is resticted for certain users.

yes, there are various access levels that you can set up in a forum to make that forum private.

Ok Have it up in testing environment. But fell to see how to setup a password to keep memebers from getting into a special forum or catoregy that I wan to resitrct to a select few members. Basically an admin area for staff use only. Thanks

I had to set up the passwords inside the database itself.
But I have found that the passworded forums don't bother challenging the potential poster. Instead it just says that you're not allowed to post.

When you create the forum you want restricted, go to the drop down box that say's "Auth Type" & select Allowed Members List. If you want the forum hidden than select the the one with "(Hidden)" next to it. Than select the members you want access to it in the members list. Don't check off the hidden box unless you only want admins to see it. I don't know which version of snitz you have but you may have to install this MOD.

Hmm, I have the latest version (as of this evening). I created all of my categories and forums manually in the database.
I set them up as private and with a password. Now shouldn't the forum challenge the user for a password, or am I missing something?

why? you can do that via the forums.
If you set the Auth Type to "password protected", registered and un-registered users would need to provide the password to enter the forum.
If you set the Auth Type to "members only & password protected", all registered users of the forum will be able to enter. Un-registered users will be asked to enter a password.
If you set the Auth Type to "allowed members list & password protected", only the members that you have selected will be able to enter the forum. All other registered or un-registered users will have to provide the password to enter the forum.

I put the topics in through the database because I didn't know any better...
However, the reason they weren't being challenged is because I hadn't set the Auth Types, which were not available because I had turned off private forums.
A few button clicks later and lo-and-behold they can enter with passwords.
Learning, learning, always learning.
