Ok. I'm trying to install the Snitz forum on my web site but I am not very experienced with most of this stuff. I use Front Page A LOT and I'm hoping I can install this forum in my server using FP2000.
I followed the instructions in the readme.. however I am not sure about a few things.
The snitz_forums_2000.mdb file needs to be uploaded into a directory where the directory permissions have been set to read/write, i.e. a cgi-bin/ or fpdb/ folder **** For this I created a "discussion web" using FP2000 and it made a directory "_forum" and I put the .MDB file in there. I don't know how to change permissions to read/write and I was hoping FP2000 did that for me when creating the directory.
NEXT Update the "strConnString" variable with the correct path to your .MDB file or to the SQL-server database. ***** I put the .MDB file in the "_forum" directory but I'm not sure how to update the correct path
LAST I tried running /forum/default.asp and every other ".asp" file from my web browser and all it wants to do is download the file(s) it will not open like other "default.asp" files on web sites... this has got me ???? huh???
Thank you for any help.... I'd love to get this working and delete my old FP2000 discussion forum!!! |

Let's start with First and Last.
First: Don't use front page. The forum code and FP don't play very nice and can cause lots of problems.
Last: This means that where you uploaded the pages does not support ASP. You are probably using Angelfire, geocities, or tripod, none of which allow ASP.

I don't see what the problem is of using FrontPage 2000 to edit code when there is an option of letting it preserve the code and not format it to FrontPage's ways. You certainly don't want to use it in normal view, just html view of course. Anyway, this is just my suggestion.

Because it will mess up the code, even if you have that option on. We have experienced it many times with other users and have tried it ourselves.
That's why we put it in the readme.txt file not to use FrontPage to edit your files.

Well, there is a free ASP editor you can download: Araneae. I heard it's pretty good.

Well, I am certainly a NEWBIE when it comes to editing web pages etc.. with anything other than Front Page. I am not using a free site like Tipod, etc.. My web site is on a paid server that can support Front Page, and I set it up to do that, but from what I understand I can use other methods, I'm just not familiar with them. With the Araneae editor, what do I do after I edit everything to put it on the web site... I take it I can't even use FP2000 to copy files to my web?
Sorry about all the dumb questions. -Ben
