OK, so it wasn't much more than an EF0 tornado from what was published, but on May 8th, 2008 a tornado went right through my house with me in it, and here I am to tell you about it! 
When I saw the trees outside the windows swishing back and forth laying nearly horizontal both ways I am not too proud to say that I quickly went to the bathroom and held onto the toilet for dear life! 
Most of my 100+ year-old oak trees around the house were topped off and two huge limbs fell on the house. I didn't even hear the noises of the limbs hitting the house nor of the limbs falling around the house. The debris that was hitting the house was that loud! Between me and my immediate neighbors we lost about 300 trees, three structures were demolished, and several other smaller structures were damaged. All of us have been cleaning up the mess even until now. We have a lot of firewood for the winter! 
I was fortunate. The neighbor that got hit before me lost his entire, large barn. Then the neighbor after me lost his smaller barn. It was tossed from the back of his 2 acres to the front (about 400 feet). The next neighbor after that had his mobile home pushed off its foundation by 5 feet, and it was even tied down with metal straps to the concrete. All of his sheds were demolished, and he lost probably 25 very old but otherwise healthy trees. The next neighbor after that, had his shop loose its roof. His fifth wheel camper was tossed into the expressway. Then, on the highway two semi-tractors with trailers were flipped over on their sides.
This tornado touched down and stayed on the ground for about 2.5 miles and was about .5 miles wide. It should have been classified as an EF1 or maybe even an EF2 in some areas judging by the damage since none of the homes here are stone or brick.

Yes, that is how IT is here. I read the weather report today which currently says clear skies.
All day the skies have been clear, and the weather appears to be clear for the next 10 days. However, at the top of the report, there is this text that says: Tornado Watch [State warnings for MO]
I mildly click on the link Tornado Watch link and find this (Notice the areas in bold type especially the counties in bold and the cities Cabool and Mountain Grove in bold as well):
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED TORNADO WATCH 450 IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 AM CDT THURSDAY FOR THE FOLLOWING AREAS
IN MISSOURI THIS WATCH INCLUDES 12 COUNTIES

BENTON CAMDEN MARIES MILLER MORGAN PHELPS PULASKI
IN SOUTH CENTRAL MISSOURI

That's the one. Alot of times them storms break up a little when they cross the river. That one just stayed mean. |

That's the mess that hit me it looks like, and on the same day, May 8th, right? We had 13 tornadoes touch down. Here is an article. Look for the EF0 tornado. There is only one. That'd be me! LOL!  |

Glad you made it and I hope noone else was hurt.
Spring is my favorite time of year, but I dread the storms that come with it.
We just went through a mesocyclone or an inland hurricane (nobody is sure what to call it). I've rode out 3 hurricanes and that's what it was like.
A big thunderstorm rolled through and I was watching the weather on tv. The storm had a u-shape behind it and was starting to wrap around. The weatherman said he was concerned about it. That's about when the power went off and the winds started blowing.
We lost 2 trees a shed and part of our roof and we got off easy. 7 miles north of us, they got hammered. It's been a month and I can still hear chainsaws. I've never seen the like of roofing advertizing, full page adds and flyers. One guy says his crews work 24/7 .

The National Weather Service classified it as a "derecho." At least I know what to call it now .

Thanks Anon! I sure am glad to be still on the ground and still here to enjoy you guys and Snitz!
Thankfully, my wife and kids were safe at my in-laws else I figure those babies would have come a bit earlier than expected. |

The irony of weather... I remember about 40-45 years ago, some "Houston Cowboy" bought some property about 2 miles from our house, had a really fancy barn built on it (with elevators, automatic watering systems, etc., etc.). There had been an old squatter hut (with an outhouse) about 200 yards from where he had his barn built. He demolished the hut and left the outhouse (I'm supposing for contrast, since his barn had 2 bathrooms).
The next summer, Mother Nature showed her stuff - his barn was spread over about 8 miles of the countryside and the outhouse was still standing. |
