What's a good average length to use that isn't as long as 75 characters?
Thanks all,

Posted - 26 August 2008 : 02:52:46 Well, I was just being lazy. I am exploring what length of a username I want to allow, so I looked at the length of the field in the db since I was there. I saw 75, and that got me curious. I'll change the db in the two members tables. It won't matter on changing the lengths since I am working on a test site.
I was hoping to go for 15 characters. Is that too short for the common length of usernames?
Thanks everyone!

Posted - 26 August 2008 : 00:54:44 Good question. Probably the registration form was able to accept long user names in earlier versions, then we set a maxlength on the user name form field but didn't modify the database field as well.
It's weird tho cause I almost felt I made that change to the database before. hmmm< |

Posted - 25 August 2008 : 22:38:10 Then why praytell does the db support 3 times the necessary amount?< |

Posted - 25 August 2008 : 21:07:16 75 characters in the database, yes. But the registration form is restricted to 25 characters. But I guess Etymon was just exploring another username length, since the database is set to allow 75 chars?< |

Posted - 25 August 2008 : 14:36:53 Nope, Davio, 75 is correct. Can you imagine a user name with 75 characters, though? section removed by Huwr. DO NOT TAKE THE PISS OUT OF PEOPLES NAMES JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THEM, IT IS RACIST.< |

Posted - 25 August 2008 : 14:32:13 75? I thought standard snitz username was set at a max of 25 characters?< |

Posted - 23 August 2008 : 12:47:09 Whew, second poster here is what I think is my longest username. Look how far it pushes all the username/avatar cells.
Methinks I may have to fix this. < |

Posted - 23 August 2008 : 01:46:27 You'll have to change a few fields in different tables in the database - find all the M_NAME fields, go into design view & change lengths to whatever you want. May also have to modify a few asp pages (not sure if any other than register or inc_profile would specify a field length) if you modify this value.< |

Posted - 23 August 2008 : 00:28:07 Wow, 75 characters sure would throw the tables out of kilter. Isn't that longer than the allowed topic title?< |

Posted - 23 August 2008 : 00:07:54 That gives me an average of 37 (not including the into the equation).< |
