Iīm trying to figure out what I need, itīs for an old Dell C600 - when searching for the current hardrive (which is a Hitachi Travelstar 20GN), I see that itīs interface is called ATA-4 ? So what is that ? All new harddrives I find are ATA-100 or ATA-133 or S-ATA, I guess I should be looking only at ATA-100, am I correct ? Iīve found 3 ATA-100 drives which suits the pricerange, will these work ?

Hitachi TravelStar 5K160 40 GB
Maxtor MobileMax STM940215A 40 GB
Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST940815A 40 GB

Thanks<

Itīs not worth it on the machine my mom uses, which is a Pentium III 850MHZ with 256MB RAM, works fine for internet browsing and listening to radio, but thatīs it.<

Price, fair enough, and if it's for a parent, they'll never appreciate it anyway...

But my Acer lappy came with a 4200RPM drive which I upgraded with a 7200RPM drive I bought in Singapore - it was like a new machine. Considering it's at least 3 years old now, but still a respectable spec (2GHz Centrino, 2 Gigs Ram, 7200RPM drive) I'm not in a rush to upgrade anytime soon. But if you have a 4200RPM drive in any of your laptops, spend the $ and get a 7200 and celebrate :-)<

Price, my friends - itīs for my mom.

The Seagate works very well, itīs fast enough and quiet like a whisper, which I love in a harddrive.<

Why not the 7200.1 ?<

I ordered this one:

Seagate Momentus 5400.3 ST940815A 40 GB

I will let you know if/when it works !!!<

You can get an adapter cable that will let you hook up the drive to an existing tower IDE controller, which can make it a lot easier to migrate data to the new laptop drive. I got an adapter from newegg.com for maybe $5 bucks US.

Just make sure that you get the highest RPM speed drive that you can afford for a marked performance improvement.

yes they should work fine. ATA-100 drives are in reality ATA-6 and should be backwards compatible.<
