Is there a MOD floating around out there that can allow users to choose a different icon than the folder to have appear next to their topics?

The only problem you'll have is that there'll no be no indication of whether or not a topic has new posts of if it's a "hot topic".

That's what I'm talking about, I just wanted to make sure that it wouldn't destroy the rest of my forums or anything by doing that. |

you could just remove the column, or instead of adding a new column, replace the existing one. |

Just to let you know, though, it won't do exactly what you want - rather than replacing the folder icon with the user-selected icon, an extra column is added to the table on forum.asp to hold the new icon.
